Iowa School Election Calendar 2008 Monday, July 7 Candidate Filing Begins. First day to file nomination papers with the secretary of the school board or community college (merged area) secretary. The secretary or a designee must be present to receive the papers. Saturday July 26 Last Day for Vacancies. Vacancies on school boards and resignations that will be effective at the beginning of the next term must be filled at the upcoming school election if the resignation or vacancy occurs on or before today. Community college board vacancies occurring on or before today must be filled at the upcoming school election. Thursday, July 31 5 p.m. Candidate Filing Deadline. Last day to file nomination papers with the school secretary. The deadline is 5 p.m. School secretary or designee must have office open until 5 p.m. Friday August 1 Nominations Delivered. School secretary delivers all nomination papers and full text of all public measures to the county auditor by 5 p.m. Tuesday August 5 Merged Area Candidates Certified. Last day for control auditor for merged area schools to certify the names of candidates and public measures to the other auditors in the merged area. Tuesday August 5 5 p.m. Withdrawal Deadline. Last day for candidates to withdraw by L Last day for candidates to withdraw by filing a written request with the school secretary. The deadline is 5 p.m. Tuesday August 5 Objection Deadline. Last day to file written objections to nomination papers or eligibility of candidate with the school secretary. Notice of the election and any changes in polling places must be published not less than four, nor more than twenty days before the date of the election. Must include accessibility notice. Monday August 25 Worry Free Postmark Date. Correctly completed voter registration forms postmarked by today are considered timely even if received after August 29. Friday August 29 5 p.m. Voter Registration Deadline. All registration forms must be received by the county auditor no later than 5 p.m. unless post-marked on or before August 25. Monday September 1 Labor Day Holiday – State Offices Closed. Friday September 5 Publication Deadline. 4 Last day to publish notices for school election. Friday September 5 Absentee Ballot Request. Deadline to request an absentee ballot to be mailed to the voter. Monday September 8 Voting Equipment Testing Completed. All voting equipment must be tested before election day. Testing must be completed not later than twelve hours before the polls open. The time and location of the test shall be included in the notice of election. Tuesday September 9 School Election Day. Hours: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Exception: The polls may open at noon for any school district election - unless the auditor receives a petition objecting to the shortened hours. Wednesday September 10 Number of Provisional Ballots Listed. A list of the number of special ballots cast in each precinct must be posted as soon as possible. Wednesday September 10 Provisional Ballots Considered. Special precinct board may reconvene no earlier than noon to examine provisional ballots. Canvass of votes by the board of supervisors. No time is specified for this meeting. Monday September 15 Recount Request Deadline. Written request for a recount must be filed in the Office of the County Auditor by 5 p.m. Monday September 29 Canvass for Merged Areas. Canvass of county abstracts for merged area schools by Board of Supervisors of control county. (This meeting is set for the last Monday in September or the last regular supervisors' meeting in September. Thursday October 2 Contest Notice Deadline. Statement of intent to contest election must be filed in the Office of the County Auditor within twenty days after the day when the incumbent was declared elected. Organizational Meeting. At its first regular meeting after the canvass of votes, the school board organizes for the new term.
