KANAWHA, Iowa (AP) The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating a fish kill on the East Branch of the Boone River. .
The fish kill was reported Friday afternoon about 2.5 miles west of Kanawha in southern Hancock County.
A man checking his minnow trap on the river reported the fish kill to the DNR after he found dead minnows in the trap and dead carp nearby.
DNR investigators arrived at the scene later and found dead fish for about one mile downstream of the initial location.
MADRID, Iowa (AP) A Madrid High School teacher has lost his job after being indicted on dogfighting charges.
The Madrid School Board voted Friday to terminate Ryan Tasler's contract, effective immediately.
Tasler was one of four Iowans arrested in a dogfighting raid. He and the other three defendants pleaded not guilty and are scheduled to stand trial on Monday.
Tasler was a science teacher and golf coach at the school.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Iowa's jobless rate rose to 6.5 percent in July, its highest level in 23 years.
That up from 6.2 percent in June and more than 2 percentage points higher than the same time last year.
Iowa Workforce Development released the updated figures Friday.
The number of jobless Iowans now stands at 109,100.
Workforce Development Director Elisabeth Buck says layoffs are likely to continue for a while, though the pace of layoffs should slow in the third quarter.
Most of the job losses in July were in manufacturing.
The U.S. jobless rate dropped to 9.4 percent in July, from 9.5 percent the previous month. Employers also laid off far fewer workers nationally and workers' hours and pay edged upward.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) Iowa officials are telling two assisted living facilities planning to forgo government licensure and inspection they will be violating state law if they go through with it.
Operators of the Jefferson Point Assisted Living Center in North Liberty say they will run the facility as an apartment complex, allowing residents who need medical assistance to pay for 24-hour health care. Dubuque Retirement Community has announced similar plans.
Inspections of the two facilities in the past 18 months have turned up violations that have resulted in fines.
Officials from both facilities say after giving up their licenses, their operations would be no different from the many unregulated apartment buildings that cater to seniors who live independently. State inspectors disagree.
Iowa officials are not willing to say what action they might take if the facilities defy the state.
CENTERVILLE, Iowa (AP) A 66-year-old southeast Iowa man faces first-degree murder charges in the killing of his wife earlier this summer.
Jackie Paul Glascock Sr. made his initial court appearance Thursday in Appanoose County District Court and is being held on $1 million bond.
He's accused of killing his wife, 56-year-old Doretta Glascock, on July 12. Authorities found her body at her rural Cincinnati home. Her husband was found nearby with self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
Jackie Glascock was treated at hospitals in Centerville, Des Moines and Iowa City before recovering enough to appear in court.
WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) An Iowa lawmaker has pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol.
State Rep. Kerry Burt entered a guilty to OWI in Polk County on Friday. He received a deferred judgment and was placed on one year probation. He was also fined $650 and must complete an OWI program.
Burt was arrested in Ankeny on Feb. 11, allegedly with a blood-alcohol level of 0.129 percent, which is above the legal limit of 0.08 percent. He attended a party with other state lawmakers on the night he was arrested.
An Ankeny Police Department report indicates Burt told officers he couldn't be arrested because he was a state legislator.
Burt faces other legal troubles. A state audit says he used a false address to get reduced tuition for children at the University of Northern Iowa's Price Laboratory school.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) Another charge has been filed against a pastor accused of sexually abusing four Iowans.
Efrain Umana appeared Friday in Douglas County Court on a charge of sexual assault of a child. His bond was set at $100,000.
According to court documents, the alleged assault occurred in February 2004.
In Iowa, the 54-year-old Umana has been charged with sexually abusing four females, including a 10- or 11-year-old girl. Pottawattamie County prosecutors have also charged Umana with forcing another woman to have sex and kissing two women against their will.
Most of those incidents allegedly occurred at the Templo Monte Horeb church Umana led in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
Umana had previously been accused of misconduct at two Lincoln churches and fired by the Lincoln school district.
