(Kiron)--Iowa Congressman Steve King announced Thursday he will not jump into the Republican race for governor. King told Radio Iowa he can be of better service as a member of congress than as a candidate for governor.
"If we get America right, we can get Iowa right. Even if we get Iowa right and don't get America right, in the long run, it won't make that much difference. So, the bottom line is, I'm compelled to move forward and to do my best to ask Iowans to be able to serve them in congress again," King says. King says he will work with the Republican candidates to help win the governor's seat.
King says he believes the Republican primary will lead to "a very legitimate conservative who will advocate for a constitutional amendment to preserve marriage, and bring this state's budget back in balance, and turn us into a state that is business friendly again, so that we have jobs for our people." King's statement announcing his decision did not close the door completely as it says "barring unforeseeable and dramatic events," he will not run for governor in 2010.
King says he put that in the statement because "sometimes things happen that you just can't anticipate" so he put that in there just in case. But King says he can't see anything now that would change his mind. King is from Kiron won a fourth term representing the 5th district last fall. (News Report by Radio Iowa)
(Denison)--Two Omaha men are in custody after leading deputies on a high-speed chase through portions of Crawford and Carroll counties.
Twenty-six-year old Mark A. Lea Junior and 36-year-old Brian K. Thessen (Thee-sen) are being held in the Carroll County jail on charges of attempted murder, eluding law enforcement and reckless driving. The chase began after eight a-m when a citizen reported two men were trying to break into a coin box at the Dow City Car Wash. The pursuit began six miles west of Denison on Highway 30, proceeded through Denison and continued east into Carroll County. About one mile and a half east of Arcadia, the suspects crashed into a sheriff's department patrol car as a deputy was attempting to deploy stop sticks. The suspect vehicle then rolled end over end into a ditch where Lea and Thessen were taken into custody.
The Crawford County Sheriff's Department says Lea was the driver. The pursuit reached speeds in excess of 100 miles-an-hour and involved the Crawford and Carroll County Sheriff's departments, Denison Police and Iowa State Patrol. (News report by Radio Iowa)
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) School officials in Spencer say they have tossed out plans for Bible classes to avoid possible litigation.
The district's proposed ``religious liberties' plan called for elective classes allowing arguments against evolution and discussions about the Bible's role in history and literature.
The plan prompted scrutiny from activists who say it promoted Christian beliefs and faced possible legal challenges.
Superintendent Greg Ebeling says a revised policy will be examined by attorneys, teachers and other groups before being made public in September.
Spencer is believed to be the first Iowa district to spell out religious freedoms in schools.
