Customers Take Advantage of Black Friday Sales

(LeMars) — Today is black Friday, a day when retailers open their stores at an earlier hour and offer sales and other reductions on goods.  It has become known as black Friday, because for many retailers they hope the sales will put them in the “black” or on the positive side of the financial balance ledger.  For many retailers, today’s sales may mean the difference between having a good fourth quarter, or having a negative fourth quarter of sales. The LeMars Wal-mart store offered sales that started at 10:00 p.m. last evening.  Store officials report a rush of customers that took advantage of the early sales.  A store employee who wished not to be identified said the LeMars Wal-mart store had at least 500 customers.

(Lincoln,NE) — The Iowa Hawkeyes will play the Nebraska Cornhuskers in what many are calling the start of a new rivalry between the two college teams.  The American Red Cross, along with Hy-Vee supermarkets are promoting the game to be referred to as the “Heroes Game”, and will honor two citizen heroes.  Representing Iowa will be Gary Launderville, the Buena Vista County sheriff from Storm Lake.   Launderville was chosen as the hero from the state of Iowa for his concern for children and for putting community safety ahead of personal safety.  Launderville and his wife, Sandy have fostered 125 children, seven of which they eventually adopted and joined their family of six.  Last January, Launderville was hit by an SUV and thrown 20 feet into the air when he was rescuing a mother and child stranded in a raging snowstorm.  At halftime, Launderville will be introduced to the crowd of 80,000 plus fans.  Prior to kick-off HyVee will present a check to the American Red Cross recognizing the important work of the American Red Cross in Iowa and Nebraska.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Des Moines police have noticed a spike in area counterfeiting cases.
Most of the cases involve counterfeit $20 bills. But Des Moines detective Tarry Pote says a man tried to use a counterfeit $100 at a convenience store on Monday. The clerk noticed it was a fake bill and kept it. The man left the store.
Police say they have some leads and have made an arrest in one case.  The counterfeits will be given to the U.S. Secret Service which investigates counterfeiting nationwide.
