LeMars Arts and Culture Examined

(LeMars) — A group of people gathered at the LeMars city council chambers last evening to discuss the arts and cultural events found in LeMars.  Leading the discussion was Mary Sundet Jones formerly of the Iowa Arts Council.

The group identified several key events that help promote the arts and culture, and help with tourism.  As a follow up to the meeting, surveys will be distributed to LeMars residents asking for their input on the arts. 

(Sioux City) — Sudden cardiac incidents claim the lives of over 2,000 teenage athletes every year.  That is the reason why Mercy Heart Center and Mercy Cardiology will be conducting cardiac screenings for high school and collegiate athletes this Saturday.  The clinic will run for four hours beginning at 8:00 a.m. at the Mercy Heart Center located at 801 Fifth Street in Sioux City.  

(Sioux City) — Sioux City Police are investigating a stabbing incident that occured yesterday morning at a motel located on Harbor Drive.  Officers found that Lyndea Boetger, 30 years of age of Sioux City had been stabbed at least twice.  The investigation found that Carlos Barrera, 26 years of age, also of Sioux City, had gotten into an argument with Boetger after picking her up at a different location. Barrerra struck Boetger in the mouth and then stabbed her twice.  The two returned to the motel where Boetger convinced Barrera to allow her to call for medical help.  Motel staff became aware of the situation and provided first aid to Boetger.  The Sergarent Bluff police department assisted with the apprehension of Barrera at the motel.  Boetger is being treated at a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.  Barrera has been charged with willful injury and aggravated domestic assault as the two are in a romantic relationship.

 

 SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – A northwest Iowa man has been convicted of supplying alcohol to a teenage girl who later died in traffic accident.
     Seventeen-year-old Mary Hughes, of Salix, died Feb. 21 in a collision as she was driving on Interstate 29 south of Sioux City.  Authorities later said her blood alcohol content was nearly three
times the legal limit.  The Iowa State Patrol says it learned that the alcohol Hughes
drank before her death had been supplied by 26-year-old Robin Armfield, of Hornick.  Armfield was
found guilty on Thursday of supplying alcohol to a minor, a serious misdemeanor.
     He faces up to a year in jail.

(Storm Lake) — Following a month long investigation the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s office in cooperation with the Department of Human Services and the Buena Vista County Attorney’s office have charged and arrested a Carson City, Nevada man with three counts of sex abuse in the 2nd degree, a class B Felonies.  Arrested on those charges was Ronald Taylor age 40 of Carson City, Nevada.  These charges stem as a result of an investigation into the sex abuse of a female victim under the age of 12 years of age back between August 2009 and May of 2010 in Marathon, Iowa.  Following the filing of charges, Taylor was arrested by the Carson City Sheriff’s office in Nevada where he waived extradition and was later transported back to Buena Vista County jail on a $150,000 cash bond.

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa (AP) – A Spirit Lake man has been given 25
years in prison for the attempted murder of his roommate.
     Forty-year-old James Naujock was sentenced on Thursday. He was
convicted earlier this month.
     Authorities say Naujock used a knife and fire poker in the July
2010 assault on Valentine Waltz.
     Waltz had testified that Naujock stabbed her and attempted to
cut her throat.
     During his testimony, Naujock said he intended to beat Waltz but
not kill her.
