Merrill Accident Under Investigation

(Merrill) A two vehicle accident just before noon, just north of Merrill, Iowa, remains under investigation.  Emergency responders arriving at the scene found a small SUV had collided nearly head-on with a 1995 Freightliner semi.  The driver of the semi, Leo Crowell Jr. of Lisman, Alabama was not injured.  The driver of the 2003 Jeep, Timothy Joe Ruhland of Le Mars was trapped inside the vehicle, and was extricated by the Merrill Fire Department.  Ruhland was flown to Sioux City by Mercy Air Care.  His condition is unknown.  Authorities say road conditions may have been a factor.  The semi was southbound, the SUV northbound on Highway 75.  The driver of the SUV lost control on the snow annd ice covered roadway.  The Plymouth County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Le Mars Ambulance, Merrill Fire and Ambulance, Iowa State Patrol, Mercy Air Care, Le Mars Police Department and the Iow DOT.
