Mock memories

(LE MARS)--The great-granddaughter of a former president of a Le Mars college is tracing her roots through a visit to Le Mars.

Working with Jan Kooiker of Westmar Alumni and Friends, Lorena McWilliams of Glendale, California researched her great-grandfather, Western Union President Charles A. Mock. Mock was president of the Le Mars college from 1911-1930.

McWilliams contacted Plymouth County Historical Museum Administrator Judy Bowman by email and connected with Kooiker to visit the Westmar Room at the museum.

Kooiker and McWilliams combed through handwritten registrars records and bound volumes of campus newspapers and annuals reading also about  McWilliams' grandfather, Byron Mock,  and her grandmother, Ruth Countryman. They met while attending Western Union marrying after graduation in 1921.

McWilliams shares an August 7th birthday with the President of Western Union who she met after he and his wife moved to Glendale, California which is now McWilliams' home. Her grandmother, Ruth Countryman Mock, took the family to Glendale.

While in Le Mars, Mock's great-granddaughter also went to Charles A. Mock Library one of three unused buildings on the campus slated for sale by the city of Le Mars. She has a painting of the building. She photographed a former Westmar graduate and instructor, Dr. Wayne Marty and Kooiker, both of Le Mars. They held the Charles A. Mock Library nameplate from the building while McWilliams captured the memory.

She suggests families ask questions while they have the opportunity to gather information.

McWilliams' mother's interest in genealogy led McWilliams' to Le Mars while pursuing her hobby of visiting Presidential Museums such as Herbert Hoover's in West Branch.
