Hung Jury On Sioux City Bar Fight

 A hung jury was declared Monday in the involuntary manslaughter case of Brad Gregg. The announcement came after four days of deliberations. Gregg also was charged with assault without intent to cause serious injury.

Gregg was charged in the October 2010 death of Joe McDonald of Ida Grove, Iowa.  Authorities say Gregg punched McDonald during a dispute.  McDonald never regained consciousness.  A telephone message left Monday for prosecutors wasn't immediately returned. Prosecutors can retry Gregg on the charges. Gregg's attorney, Mike Williams, says he is disappointed jurors did not acquit Gregg but respects their decision.

 

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Iowa businesses along the Missouri River are being asked to report flood damage as the state gathers moreinformation to appeal a decision by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to reject flood aid.  FEMA notified the state in early August that activation of the Federal Individual Assistance Program was denied for five counties- Fremont, Harrison, Monona, Pottawattamie and Woodbury. The program helps individuals and businesses with grants and loans.  FEMA earlier this month extended Iowa's request for more time to appeal. The new deadline is Oct. 7.  Iowa expects more and more damage will surface as the flood waters continue to fall.

(LeMars) -- LeMars city officials have announced it is time for the annual sewer cleaning. The city has hired an outside contractor to do the annual sewer cleaning starting Monday, October 3. Ron Kayser, city wastewater superintendent says the process could take up to six weeks to complete. LeMars' residents may experience some minor sewer problems during the time of the cleaning. Kayser says the area north of Plymouth Street will be done first, followed by the area north of 3th street Southeast going east from Central Avenue to 14th Avenue Southeast.

 (Sioux Center, IA) --Farmers Coop Society of Sioux Center has been named one of Iowa's Top Workplaces in the Des Moines Register's Top Workplaces survey. Farmers Coop Society was recognized by their employees for the honor, after their employees conducted a survey ranking the company in categories of career opportunities, management, and pay and benefits.

Farmers Coop Society's employees completed a survey earlier this summer to be considered for the award. FCS was the only cooperative in the state of Iowa named with the honor.

117 companies participated in the program and 70 companies were selected for the Top Workplaces award. Farmers Coop Society was ranked 17th  among the mid-sized companies that were selected. 

 

(Sioux City) -- The Mercy Medical Center Foundation has recently invested over $850,000 in new technology that dramatically enhances the patient care experience at Mercy.  The foundation board approved the purchase of 22 additional de-fib-rill-ators that will be used throughout the hospital along with 24 spacelab monitors  that will be put to immediate use in the Mercy Intensive Care Unit.  The importance of defibrillators has been demonstrated in venues other than hospitals.  It is common for schools, airports, and other gathering areas to have portable defibrillators available should the need arise.

(Sioux City) -- President Obama's campaign staff has announced that they will celebrate the opening of an office and phone banks in Sioux City Iowa. Celebrations are scheduled for Tuesday.  Organizing for America, Iowa spokesman John Kraus says celebrations are being planned for other Iowa offices this week. They include Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs, Davenport, Des Moines, Dubuque, Iowa City and Waterloo.  The Sioux City office will be located at 4106 Morningside Avenue.  Kraus says since the President made his announcement to seek re-election in April, Oganizing for America has held over 100 training seminars, and have collected over 20,000 commitments from across the state.
