Iowa Barn Tour: October 15 & 16
(ALTON)-- 80 barns scattered throughout Iowa will be the focus this weekend for some travelers and history buffs. The Iowa Barn Foundation's annual self-guided historic barn tour features 12 barns in Northwest Iowa, with tours being held at each location from 8:30am to 5:30pm Saturday and Sunday. The Roghair Barn near Alton is one of the featured locations. Ruth and Sye Roghair spent lots of time and resources getting their 1916 barn fixed up and close to original condition. They now use it for hay storage but Ruth remembers learning to milk the cows by hand in there when she and Sye were first married.
They officially finished the restoration on their barn in 2005 and won the award of distinction for their efforts. Ruth is proud of the barn and the fact that it represents their family's livelihood. She hopes that people take advantage of this weekends tour to learn about these old Iowa jems that are disappearing from the landscape.
