Le Mars (1-0) 5 Denison-Schleswig 1

(LE MARS) -- Senior Chris Eckstaine allowed just one hit through five innings and struck out eight to pitch the Le Mars Bulldogs to a 5-1 victory over Denison-Schleswig in the season-opener for both schools.  Eckstaine survived a night that saw him walk six and three other Monarchs reached on hit-batsman.  Denison-Schleswig stranded 13 base runners.  The Bulldogs did most of their damage in the first inning, scoring three runs.  Jacob Lamoreaux tripled into the right field corner to score Hunter Rowe from second base and then scored the second run on a wild pitch by freshman starter Sean Houston.  Andy Heffner plated Kendall Candor with a RBI-single to cap the first inning uprising.  Colin Borchers made it 4-0 in the second with a sacrifice fly and Hunter Rowe singled home the final Bulldog run in the fifth.  Brady Thies broke up Eckstaine's no-hit bid with a RBI-double in the fifth.  The Monarchs finished with four hits.  Le Mars travels to Rock Rapids Thursday to play Central Lyon.

Gehlen Catholic (1-0/1-0) 6 Hinton 2

(HINTON) -- Senior Amber Timmins scattered six hits and struck out nine, including the final five batters of the game, Tuesday night in Hinton as Gehlen won their season opener over the Blackhawks 6-2.  Timmins also starred at the plate, going 2-for-4 and driving in three runs.  Steph Rohe had a triple and a  RBI and scored a run for the Lady Jays.  Lisa Gunter had two hits, including a triple.  Shannon Miller had a triple for the Blackhawks.  Gehlen scored four runs in the third inning to erase a 1-0 deficit, taking advantage of three Blackhawk errors.  Gehlen hosts Remsen-Union Wednesday night while Hinton travels to West Sioux.

(HINTON) -- Morgan Wenzel struck out 17 Gehlen batters and allowed just two hits to pitch Hinton to a 9-2 victory over the Jays in Hinton Tuesday night.  A double by Mitchell Flack and a single by Blake Wiltgen were the lone Gehlen hits for the night.  Morgan Wenzel led the Blackhawks with two hits.  Blake Wiltgen took the loss, working the first 4 2/3 innings before giving way to Austin Herbst.  Wiltgen allowed only two hits but walked five while striking out five.  Gehlen celebrates their home opener Wednesday night at the Riverview Complex against Remsen-Union.  The varsity game will be carried on KLEM at 7:30.

(SIOUX CITY) -- Abbie Pollow's two-run, bases-loaded double in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted Sioux City East to a thrilling 5-4 victory over Le Mars Wednesday night in Sioux City.  Madison Heidebrink had given the Lady Bulldogs a 4-3 lead in the top of the eighth with her first career home run.  East sent the game into extra innings with a run in the bottom of the seventh after Kassidy Rieken had put Le Mars in front, 3-2, with her third hit of the game in the fifth inning.  Molly Renken pitched all eight innings for Le mars, scattering six hits and striking out eleven.  The Lady Bulldogs take an 0-and-1 record to Sheldon Thursday night.

(LE MARS) -- Remsen-Union scored five runs on six hits in the fourth inning and then held off Gehlen Catholic in the final two innings for a 5-3 War Eagle Conference victory Wednesday night at the Riverview Complex.  AmberTimmins' two-run double in the sixth inning cut a 5-0 deficit to 5-2 and Lisa Gunter's RBI double in the seventh inning drew the Lady Jays to withing two runs before winning pitcher Kim Schroeder retired Steph Rohe on a ground out and then got Amber Timmins to fly out to right to end the game.  The Lady Jays take a 1-and-1 record to Kingsley Saturday for the Kingsley-Pierson Invitational.



Remsen-Union 6 Gehlen Catholic 0

(LE MARS) – The early season offensive struggles for the Gehlen Catholic baseball team continued Wednesday night as the Jays dropped their home opener 6-0 to Remsen-Union.  A night after Logan Jurgensmeier of Hinton two-hit the Jays and struck out 17, R-U’s Danny Smith fired a three-hit shutout and struck out 12.  Smith carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before Dylan Kneip beat out an infield roller and Solomon Freking beat out a bunt.  Blake Wiltgen led off the seventh inning with a solid single to center before Smith struck out the final three batters to preserve the shutout.  The Rockets scored their first three runs on infield ground outs by Brian West, Austin Schmidt and Cam Kuchel.  R-U broke the game open with three runs in the seventh, thanks to two walks, two hits and a key Gehlen error.  The 0-and-2 Jays are idle until next week.

Le Mars at Sheldon, suspended by rain in the second inning with Le Mars leading 5-0.  The game will be finished at a later date.

(SHELDON) -- Le Mars led 5-0 going into the bottom of the second inning when rain halted play in Sheldon Thursday night in high school softball action.  The Lady Bulldogs scored in the first inning when Kylee Lang was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing home Emily Ellefson.  Ellefson socked a three-run, two-out homer in the second inning to key a four-run uprising.  Madison Heidebrink followed Ellefson's first home run of the season with a double and she went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball as the rain had started falling.  Play was halted before Sheldon's at-bat in the bottom of the second.  The two teams hope to finish the contest at a future date.

CLASS 1A BOYS STATE SINGLES & DOUBLES TOURNAMENT AT WATERLOO (Le Mars' Kolin Brooks lost in the first round 4-6, 1-6 to Alexander Punj of Fairfield, dropping him into the consolation bracket where he won 6-3, 6-2 over Erik Smith of Albia.  Brooks was eliminated in the consolation quarterfinals when he lost 1-6, 2-6 to Will Hampton of Grinnell.)

Bishop Heelan Invitational at Riverside Park (Le Mars 12 Sioux City North 3  //  Le Mars 5 Charter Oak-Ute 0)

(SIOUX CITY) -- Le Mars improved to 2-and-1 for the season with a pair wins in the Bishop Heelan Classic Friday at Riverside Park.  In the first game Friday afternoon, the Lady Bulldogs beat Sioux City North 12-3.  Molly Renken got the win, scattering seven hits while walking eight and striking out 12.  Kylee Lang keyed a four-run first inning with a bases-loaded triple.  Le Mars went on to pepper the scoreboard with a run in the third, three more in the fourth and a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.  Ashley Phelan, Emily Ellefson, Kylee Lang, Emily Pick and Kassidy Rieken all had two hits each to pace a 14-hit attack.  In the second game Friday night, Janessa Milbrodt threw a two-hit shutout as Le Mars beat Charter Oak-Ute 5-0.  Milbrodt didn't walk a batter and struck out five in her varsity debut in the pitching circle.  Again Le Mars started fast with a pair of runs in the first inning.  The Lady Bulldogs added single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.  Ashley Phelan went 4-for-4 with a double to pace a ten-hit attack, Madison Heidebrink collected two hits, including a double and drove in a pair of runs and Emily Pick had a triple among her two hits.  Le Mars continues play at the Heelan Classic Saturday.

Bishop Heelan Invitational at Riverside Park (Lewis Central 8 Le Mars 6  //  Le Mars 7 Sioux City East 2)

(SIOUX CITY) -- Le Mars split their two games Saturday at the Bishop Heelan Invitational softball tournament, giving the Lady Bulldogs a 3-and-1 record during the two days of play at Riverside Park.  Le Mars is now 3-and-2 for the season.  Morgan Means' grand slam in the seventh inning lifted Lewis Central to an 8-6 win over Le Mars in the Lady Bulldogs first game of the day Saturday.  Le Mars then beat Sioux City East 7-2 behind Janessa Milbrodt's two-hit, eight strikeout pitching performance.

(KINGLSEY) -- Gehlen Catholic improved to 4-and-1 for the season, winning all three games the Lady Jays played Saturday at the Kingsley-Pierson Invitational.  Amber Timmins pitched the Lady Jays to a 3-2 win over Lawton-Bronson and a 4-1 victory over Westwood.  Alison Schnepf earned her first win of the season in the pitching circle, guiding Gehlen to a 14-4 win over the host school, Kingsley-Pierson.  Abby Freking went 6-for-11 on the day, Steph Rohe was 5-for-11, and Lisa Gunter was 5-for-10 with a triple.



Sioux City East Invitational (Le Mars 4 Sioux City East 1  //  Le Mars (3-0) 7 Sioux City West 2)

(SIOUX CITY) -- Colin Borchers fired a five-hitter and struck out 10 to pitch Le Mars to a 4-1 victory over Sioux City East in baseball action at East's Invitational Saturday.  The Bulldogs scored three runs in the fourth inning to support Borchers' pitching effort.  Le Mars improved to 3-and-0 for the season with a 7-2 victory over Sioux City West as Parker Rolfes tossed a three-hitter for the Bulldogs.  Hunter Rowe and Jacob Lemoreux had two hits each for Le Mars and the Bulldogs took advantage of five Wolverine errors.
