Iowa City Landfill Fire

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - City officials say they may never be able to pinpoint the cause of a huge Iowa City landfill fire burning for a fourth day.
A fire continues to smolder and create clouds of smoke at the landfill, which is located in a rural area near Highway 218, west of the city. A cloud of haze is visible for miles.
City spokesman Geoff Fruin says it will cost up to $6 million to clean up and rebuild the landfill cell where the fire started Saturday evening in an area where dumping had occurred earlier. Rick Fosse, the public works director for Iowa City, says it will probably be several more days before the fire burns down.

16-year-old Melody Simmonds, of Decorah, was pronounced dead at the scene on Monday night. The Iowa State Patrol says her passenger, 16-year-old Brandon Grocholski, of Elkader, was taken to a nearby hospital, then flown to a hospital in La Crosse, Wis.  The accident occurred about 10:10 p.m. on U.S. Highway 52, about three miles west of Postville. The patrol says Simmonds was driving south in a sport utility vehicle when it ran off the roadway into a ditch and rolled several times.
