St. Joseph Steeple To Come Down Thursday
(Le Mars) -- The famous steeple of the St. Joseph Catholic Church of Le Mars is scheduled to come down on Thursday morning. Crews are scheduled to dismantle the steeple as part of the demolition of the church. Sixth Avenue northeast from Plymouth Street to First Street Northeast and Plymouth Street from Sixth Avenue East to Seventh Avenue East will be closed on Thursday starting at 6:00 a.m. The roof of the church has already been removed. Margie Moir serves as a lay pastorial director for St. Joseph's. She says the old church has served the community well.
Moir says some of her fondest memories of the church include her wedding and the baptisim of her children and grandchildren. Moir says it will be sad to see the old church being torn down, but at the same time, church members are excited about the new church.
The St. Joseph member says several items from the old church will be included in the new St. Joseph church, including the alter.
Moir says with the old church being torn down and the new church about to open, it is a "very emotional time" for the congregation of St. Joseph.
