Corn Harvest Underway In Plymouth Co.
(Boone) -- The calendar just flipped over to September, but since the drought has dried up their fields, many farmers have already started with this year's corn harvest, including here at Plymouth County. But is the corn ready for harvest? Iowa State University extension corn specialist, Roger Elmore says some of the corn is mature, but he says other
farmers may want to get a start on harvest due to poor stalk stands.
A lot of comparisons have been made between this summer's drought and the drought that struck Iowa in 1988. Elmore says the trend line is a little better than in 1988.
The Iowa State University corn specialist says Iowa is in better shape than the crops in Illinois and Indiana, where he says yields are projected to be far less than the Hawkeye state. Elmore says this drought year offers an opportunity to learn.
Elmore says seed companies and university research alike, will focus on stalk quality as a result of this dry year.
