(high school basketball)

(SIOUX CITY) -- The top-rated (4A) Bishop Heelan girls basketball team survived a scare from unrated Le Mars Tuesday night, winning 56-46 at the 'Pit' in Sioux City.  The two teams were tied at 37-all with 5:53 to play before the Crusaders used a full-court trapping defense to gain the upper hand.  MaKayla Augustine knocked down 18 points for Bishop Heelan and Jenna Bork added 15.  Molly Renken led all scorers with a career-high 20 for Le Mars.  The Lady Bulldogs fall to 2-and-6 for the season and Bishop Heelan hits the holiday break at 7-and-1.  The number-six rated (3A) Bishop Heelan boys beat Le Mars 57-42 Tuesday behind Shane Graves' 21 points and Kyle Heaton's 17.  Graves connected on four three's in the decisive third quarter and scored 14 of the Crusaders' 16 points that quarter as Heelan opened up a 20-point lead late in the quarter.  Le Mars ran off ten unanswered points to pull to within ten with seven minutes to play before the Crusaders regained control of the contest and won for the fourth time in six games.  Le Mars falls to 4-and-3 and have dropped three of their last four games.  Jake Irwin had 15 points to lead the Bulldogs scoring attack with Kyle Dolph adding eight and Tanner Anthony six.  Le Mars did win the J-V boys game 48-42 behind Tyler Paulson's 24 points.  Le Mars closes out their pre-Christmas schedule Friday at home against Cherokee in a Lakes Conference girl/boy doubleheader.

(LE MARS) -- Remsen St. Mary's handed eighth-rated (1A) Gehlen Catholic their first loss of the season 41-37 in a girls War Eagle Conference match-up Tuesday night at the Reardon Family gym in Le Mars.  Alexis Bunkers keyed the win with 14 points with Paige Harpenau adding 11.  Katelin Langel and Bailey Wiltgen had nine each for the Lady Jays.  Gehlen falls to 7-and-1 for the season and 4-and-1 in the W-E-C.  Michael Whitehead and Blake Wiltgen combined for 29 points to lead the Gehlen Catholic boys to a 67-43 War Eagle Conference win over the Remsen St. Mary's boys.  Whitehead had a game-high 19 points and Wiltgen added 10.  Tyler Delperdang had 12 to pace the Hawks.  The win was the fifth in a row for Gehlen to improve their record to 6-and-2 and 5-and-0 in the league.  Gehlen hosts Storm Lake St. Mary's Thursday before closing out their pre-Christmas schedule at Akron-Westfield Friday.
