LE MARS -- Senior Molly Renken opened the 2013 summer softball season with a dominant pitching performance, tossing a two-hit shutout with one walk and ten strikeouts as Le Mars beat Sioux City East 8-0 Wednesday night at the Bulldog Complex.  Renken allowed a first inning single and another in the seventh for the Black Raiders only hits.  Renken also had a RBI single.  Kassidy Rieken smacked a two-run homer for the Lady Bulldogs, their first of the 2013 season.  Le Mars set a school record with 24 round-trippers in 2012.  Mary Kate Eckstaine returned to the line-up with a first inning RBI double.  Eckstaine missed all of the 2012 season after under going knee surgery.  Holly Schneider led an eight-hit attack with two hits for Le Mars with a RBI.  Madison Heidebrink and Janessa Milbrodt also drove in Bulldog runs.  Le Mars hosts Sheldon Thursday night.

LE MARS -- Molly Renken flirted with a no-hitter before settling on a two-hit shutout as Le Mars won 6-0 over Sheldon to improve to 2-and-0 for the season.  Renken had a perfect game through five innings.  An error and a walk in the sixth ended the perfect bid and a pair of seventh inning hits halted the no-hit bid.  Renken struck out 13.  Ashley Phelan had the big blow in the game, drilling a two-run homer to key a four-run fourth inning.  Madison Heidebrink also drove in a pair of runs with a sacrifice fly and a single.

LE MARS -- Gehlen Catholic broke through for eight runs in the first inning and took advantage of eleven walks to win their season opener 18-10 over Spalding Catholic in a make-up game at the River View Complex.  Gehlen pitchers also issued eleven walks but allowed only six hits.  The Lady Jays collected 14 hits with Abby Freking, Jill Kessenich, Carly Bunkers, Emily Pratt and Brittany Krienert getting two each.  Kessenich had four RBI's for Gehlen and also earned the pitching win.

ROCK RAPIDS --A nine-run seventh inning turned a 9-2 lead into a rout as Le Mars won their opener over Central Lyon 18-2 Thursday night in Rock Rapids.  Dayton Rand had two-run homer and finished with three RBI's for the Bulldogs with Andy Heffner and Tyler DeVos collected two RBI's each.  A 14-hit attack for Le Mars featured five players getting two hits each, Jacob Lamoureax, Hunter Rowe, Kendall Candor, Colan Borchers and Rand.  Parker Rolfes threw a complete-game, five-hitter for Le Mars.

LE MARS -- Spalding Catholic took advantage of two errors and a wild pitch to score a pair of eighth inning runs and the Spartans spoiled Gehlen's season opener with a 5-3 victory in a make-up game at the River View Complex.  Ryan Stoll scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch before Gehlen's third error of the game allowed an insurance run to cross the plate.  Solomon Freking had a two-run double for the Jays but Gehlen stranded eleven base runners.  Lucas Hunt and Jarod Steffes had RBI doubles for Spalding.  Ryan Stoll was the winning pitcher while Blake Wiltgen took the loss.  Both went all eight inning and both had seven strikeouts.

CLASS 1A BOYS STATE TOURNAMENT AT WATERLOO -- Le Mars doubles team of Matt Ellefson & Evan Richards lost their first round match 5-7, 1-6 to a doubles team from Atlantic.  Ellefson and Richards lost 3-6, 2-6 in the consolation bracket to a Pella team and were eliminated.

CLASS 3A BOYS STATE MEET AT AMES -- Ryan Christy of M-O-C/Floyd Valley is 13th with an opening round 80.

CLASS 2A BOYS STATE MEET AT LIVERMORE -- Mike Myers of Emmetsburg leads medal play after day one with a 75 and Zach Elgersma of Western Christian is 15th with an 80.

CLASS 1A BOYS STATE MEET AT PANORA -- Sibley-Ocheyedan leads the team race after day one with a 344 with West Lyon sitting third with a 359.

HAWARDEN -- West Sioux rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to erase a 6-2 deficit and won a 7-6 War Eagle Conference baseball victory from Gehlen Catholic Friday.  Solomon Freking took the loss in relief of starter Austin Herbst.  Herbst allowed just three hits through six innings with five walks and five strikeouts but was unable to close out the seventh inning.  Solomon Freking led the Jays offensively with two hits while Noah Livermore and Austin Herbst had RBI hits.  Gehlen stranded thirteen runners a day after stranding eleven against Spalding.

SIOUX CITY -- Le Mars snapped a 2-2 tie with three runs in the seventh inning Friday night to turn back Sioux City North 5-2.  Le Mars' Colan Borchers and North's Robert Neustrom hooked up in an old fashion pitchers' duel.  Borchers allowed six hits and had eight strike outs while Neustrom checked Le Mars to five hits but walked four before being relieved by Alec Hauge.  Hunter Rowe had two hits for Le Mars with Jacob Lamoreaux, Kendall Candor, Colan Borchers and Tyler DeVos all collecting RBI's for the Bulldogs.

IRETON -- Sophomore Taylor Peters had three hits and five RBI's, belting her first career home run, to lead Gehlen Catholic to a 15-7 War Eagle Conference win over West Sioux Friday night.  Peters' two-run single in the fourth erased a 2-1 deficit and put the Lady Jays in front to stay.  She keyed a five-run fifth with a two-run homer into a stiff breeze and added a RBI-single in the sixth when Gehlen struck for five more runs.  Eight West Sioux errors helped fuel Gehlen's late charge.  Gehlen backed freshman Jill Kessenich with a 12-hit attack.  Kessenich scattered nine hits, walked seven and had ten wild pitches but improved to 2-and-0 in her second varsity start.

SIOUX CITY -- The Le Mars Lady Bulldogs continued their winning ways with two more victories in the Bishop Heelan/CNOS Classic.  Molly Renken continued her dominate pitching with another two-hit shutout in an 11-0, five inning victory over Sergeant Bluff-Luton,  It was Renken's third two-hit shutout in the opening week of the season.  Renken had no walks and nine strikeouts.  Le Mars sent ten batters to the plate in a five-run fifth inning with Emily Ellefson's three-run double the key blow.  Madison Heidebrink had a two-run double an inning earlier.  In the second game of the day for Le Mars, the Lady Bulldogs struck for six runs in the second inning to get control early in a 9-4 win over Denison-Schleswig.  Madison Heidebrink, who had a team-high seven home runs in 2012, hit her first of the new season in the second inning with a teammate aboard.  Heidebrink finished with three hits.  Emily Ellefson had a pair of RBI singles for Le Mars and Ashley Phelan and Janessa Milbrodt belted solo homers.  Molly Renken and Janessa Milbrodt shared the pitching chores with Renken improving to 4-and-0.

CLASS 3A BOYS STATE MEET AT AMES -- Ryan Christy of M-O-C/Floyd Valley finished fifth with a 158 (80-78)

CLASS 2A BOYS STATE MEET AT LIVERMORE -- Mike Myers of Emmetsburg finished tied for fifth with a 158 (75-83) and Zach Elgersma of Western Christian finished 16th with a 162 (80-82).

CLASS 1A BOYS STATE MEET AT PANORA -- Sibley-Ocheyedan won the team title with a 673, led by meet medalist Ty Hanna with a 158 (83-75) and West Lyon finished third with a two-day total of 723.

Kingsley-Pierson Invitational

KINGSLEY -- Gehlen Catholic went 1-and-2 for the day at the Kingsley-Pierson Invitational Saturday.  State-rated Westwood handed the Lady Jays their first loss of the season 14-6, bunching eleven hits with eight walks.  Abby Freking had two hits and one RBI to lead Gehlen's seven-hit attack.  Gehlen bounced back with a 14-12 win over River Valley, getting eleven hits and taking advantage of eight walks.  Miranda Bunkers had two hits and three RBI's to pace the Lady Jays' offensive attack with Jill Kessenich, Shannon Smith, and Kelsey Marienau also getting two hits each.  Jill Kessenich and Taylor Peters combined to walk ten batters while surrendering eleven hits.  Gehlen lost 12-0 to Alta-Aurelia, being checked to five hits.  Miranda Bunkers had two hits for the Lady Jays.  Taylor Peters, Emily Meyer and Jill Kessenich split the pitching chores.

SIOUX CITY -- Le Mars ran their record to 6-and-0 with two more wins Saturday in the Bishop Heelan/CNOS Classic.  Le Mars beat Lewis Central 11-1 in five innings and Woodbury Central 9-3.  In the win over Lewis Central, Le Mars had six extra base hits among their eight hits for the game to back Molly Renken's three-hit, eight strikeout pitching performance.  Renken and Ashley Phelan led the offense with two hits and two RBI's each.  The match-up with Woodbury Central paired two state-rated teams against each other.  Kassidy Rieken checked the Wildcats on seven hits in a game shortened to four inning by time constraints with three walks and no strike outs.  Ashley Phelan homered for the Lady Bulldogs and Emily Ellefson had a RBI triple and a RBI double against Woodbury Central's Jafe Paterson.  Holly Schneider also had two RBI's on a pair of hits.

Le Mars 9, Sioux City West 1     (RECORD: 3-and-0)

LE MARS -- The Bulldogs stayed unbeaten through three games, using a six-run sixth inning Saturday to break open a tight game with Sioux City West to win their home opener 9-1.  Jacob Lamoreaux led the way to victory for Le Mars, earning the win with three shutout innings of relief, and going 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI's.  Mitch Timp also drove in a pair of runs for the Bulldogs.  Hunter Rowe started the game on the mound and worked the first four innings, allowing three hits with two strikeouts.
