(HARTLEY) -- Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn rallied from a 4-2 deficit with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Thursday night in Hartley to edge Gehlen Catholic 5-4 in War Eagle Conference softball action that was featured on KLEM.  Gehlen had rallied back from a 2-0 deficit with two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth before Jessica Stofferan, a first team all-War Eagle Conference pick in 2012, delivered a two-out, two-run single to tie the game and then scored the go-ahead run on a single by Kathryn Ahlers.  It was Ahlers third hit of the game.  Gehlen scored two runs in the fifth on a two-out throwing error to tie the game at 2-all and went ahead on a RBI double by Jill Kessenich and a RBI single by Shannon Smith an inning later.  The Hawks combined three hits and a walk into the winning rally in the sixth.  The Lady Jays ended the game in the top of the seventh with the tying run on second base.  Gehlen falls to 6-and-8 with the loss and 4-and-4 in the W-E-C.  The Lady Jays will play a home game for the first time since May 23 when they host Remsen St. Mary's Monday at the Riverview Complex.  Flooding has forced the Lady Jays to alter their schedule to all road games since the Memorial Day weekend flood inundated their field.  Gehlen plays three games Friday and Saturday in the Lady Bulldog Classic in Le Mars.

(LE MARS) -- Le Mars bounced back from their first loss of the season Friday with an 8-0 win over state-rated, unbeaten Akron-Westfield in the final game of the opening day of the Lady Bulldog Classic.  The loss dropped A-W to 11-and-1.  After a scoreless pitcher's duel for the first four innings between the Westerners' Kayla Tindall and Le Mars' Molly Renken, the Lady Bulldogs erupted for eight runs in the fifth inning, sending twelve batters to the plate and collecting seven of their eleven hits.  Ashley Phelan's bases-loaded ground out started the scoring.  Holly Schneider followed with a two-out bunt single to plate a second run and then the bats broke out for L-C-H-S.  Emily Ellefson had a two-run double, Madison Heidebrink a RBI single, Mary Kate Eckstaine a RBI double and Molly Renken capped the fifth inning scoring with a two-run homer.  Renken finished with a four-hit shutout, her tenth of the season.  She issued one walk and had twelve strike outs.  Earlier in the day, Sioux City North brought an end to Le Mars' 13-game winning streak, handing the Lady Bulldogs their first loss, 5-2.  The Stars took advantage of two early errors to take a 4-0 lead after two innings.  The Lady Bulldogs squandered several scoring opportunities before Mary Kate Eckstaine delivered a two-run double in the fifth to cut a 5-0 deficit to 5-2.  Le Mars went down in order in the seventh.  The split leaves the Lady Bulldogs at 14-and-1 for the season.

(LE MARS) -- The number-three ranked Le Mars Bulldogs suffered their first loss of the season Friday night, dropping a 10-5 decision to the visiting Harlan Cyclones.  Le Mars scored three runs in the fifth inning to rally from a 4-1 deficit, sending the game into the final two inning tied at 4-4.  Nick Kaufman's two-run double in the sixth put Harlan back in front 6-4 and a three-run double by David Ratigan in the seventh keyed a four-run inning that put the Cyclones out of reach.  Bulldog ace Colan Borchers struggled with command all night, finishing with four walks and two hit batters.  Borch did pick three runners off first base to avoid some rough waters early in the game but it just wasn't his night.  Andy Hefner led the Bulldogs' offense with three hits and three RBI's.  Hunter Rowe also had three hits and scored a pair of runs.  Le Mars falls to 7-and-1 for the season and look to bounce back with a road trip to Glenwood Saturday.
