(LE MARS) -- Le Mars celebrated their new number one ranking in the Class 4A girls ratings this week with a 9-2 Lakes Conference victory over Cherokee Friday night at the Bulldog Sports Complex.  The win was their 28th of the season, matching the school record set a year ago.  The Lady Bulldogs improved to 28-and-0 with an 11-and-0 conference mark.  Sophomore Jayme Kelly was given an opportunity to pitch a varsity game, giving Molly Renken another night of rest.  Kelly allowed three hits with three walks and four strike outs.  A four-run sixth inning by Le Mars turned a 5-2 lead into a seven-run cushion going into the seventh inning.  Ashley Phelan's RBI single plated the first run in the sixth and Holly Schneider tripled home Phelan with the second run of the inning.  Kylee Lang led the Lady Bulldogs offensively with a pair of doubles and a RBI.

(LE MARS) -- South O'Brien overcame an eight-run first inning by Gehlen Catholic and rallied to beat the Lady Jays 16-10 in War Eagle Conference softball action Friday night at the Riverview Complex.  The Wolverines scored three runs in the sixth inning to take an 11-10 lead and added five more in the seventh.  The Wolverines roughed up the Lady Jays' Brittany Krienert for 16 hits and took advantage of seven Gehlen errors.  Taylor Paulsen had four hits to lead South O'Brien with Emma Sweeney adding another three hits.  Shannon Smith led Gehlen with three hits and a pair of RBI's.  The Lady Jays fall to 11-and-15 for the season and 7-and-10 in the War Eagle Conference.

Gehlen Catholic 10, South O'Brien 7         (RECORD: 9-11 / 7-9)

(CHEROKEE) -- Cherokee's Mason Kruger was thrown out attempting to steal home plate in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday night, halting a seventh inning rally by the last place Braves and preserving a wild 11-10 win by the Lakes Conference leading Le Mars Bulldogs in Cherokee.  Le Mars took a 7-1 lead in the top of the third inning and seemingly were on the way to an easy win.  Cherokee took advantage of nine walks, a hit-batsman and four errors in the final three innings to score eight runs.  Fortunately, Le Mars plated four runs in the sixth for an 11-5 lead before the Braves scored a run in the bottom of the sixth and four more in the seventh.   Kruger's caught stealing ended a bases-loaded threat in the seventh.  Hunter Rowe earned a save while Dayton Rand picked up the win.  Le Mars used four pitchers in the game.  Le Mars had 17 hits for the second straight game but stranded 15 base runners.  Matt Ellefson had four hits and two RBI's to lead the Bulldogs with Dayton Rand and Mitch Timp collecting three hits each.  The Bulldogs improve to 19-and-3 with the win and 10-and-1 in the Lakes Conference.

(LE MARS) -- Gehlen Catholic was within an out of winning a ten-run rule verdict over South O'Brien Friday night in War Eagle Conference baseball action at the Riverview Complex before the Wolverines rallied with seven runs in the final three innings to make it interesting.  The Jays held off the rally to win their third straight, 10-7.  Gehlen scored seven runs in the fourth inning to take a 10-0 lead before South O'Brien scored five runs after two were out in the fifth and added a two-run homer in the seventh to close to within three.  Michael Whitehead made his second start of the season and threw a five-hitter with ten strike outs.  Blake Wiltgen led the offense with three hits and two RBI's.  Gehlen is now 9-and-11 for the season and 7-and-9 in the W-E-C.
