KLEM Local Schedule (week of July 15)

MONDAY RESULTS - July 15

(high school softball)

(HINTON) -- Top-rated Akron-Westfield returns to the 1A State softball tournament after a one-year absence, punching their ticket with an 11-3 win over Charter Oak-Ute Monday night in Hinton to win the region one title.  After spotting the Bobcats a 3-2 lead in the first inning, the Westerners erupted for six runs in the third inning to take an 8-3 lead and were never headed after that.  Jordan Hansen had a two-run triple and Jaclyn Smith added a two-run single to key the inning.  Kayla Tindall threw a four-hitter with one walk and six strike outs.  She also had three hits offensively, including a RBI-double in the fourth inning.  Akron-Westfield takes a 34-and-2 record to Fort Dodge Monday against 16-and-7 Janesville at 11 a.m. on diamond 1.

(STORM LAKE) -- Number-eight Remsen St. Mary's took advantage of four errors to score six unearned runs and the Lady Hawks beat Bishop Garrigan 9-3 in the 1A region-two title game at Storm Lake Monday night to qualify for their first State softball tournament since 1999.  It will be their third trip overall.  Two Garrigan errors extended the second inning for Remsen St. Mary's and Makenzie Ricke made the Golden Bears pay, slugging her first home run of the season, a two-run shot over the left field fence for a 4-1 lead.  Bishop Garrigan drew to within 4-3 with single runs in the third and fourth innings before the Hawks batted around in the fifth and scored three runs.  Again it was a Garrigan error that fueled the inning.  Back-to-back two-out RBI-doubles by Alexis Bunkers and Lyndsie Schorg added two more runs in the sixth to complete the scoring.  The two teams combined for 25 hits.  Bunkers led a 13-hit St. Mary's attack with two singles and a double.  Remsen St. Mary's takes a 28-and-6 record and nine-game winning streak to Fort Dodge Monday to play 35-and-6 Newell-Fonda at 1 p.m. on diamond 1.

CLASS 1A DISTRICT SEMIFINALS

(LE MARS) -- Gehlen's sophomore first baseman Noah Livermore started the night hitting just .184, hardly the resume' of hero.  Right?  Yet it was a bases-loaded, line-drive double into the gap in left-center by Livermore that chased home a pair of runs and brought an end to the District tournament semifinal game at the Riverview Complex, giving Gehlen Catholic a thrilling 4-3, eight-inning victory over number-five Hinton.  The victory moves the Jays into the District title game Saturday night against West Lyon at Gehlen's Riverview Complex at 7 p.m.  Solomon Freking started the scoring with a third inning homer and Gehlen moved in front 2-0 an inning later on Angel Chagolla's RBI-single.  The Blackhawks tied the game in the sixth with a pair of runs, scoring on a wild pitch and a ground out.  Hinton took a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth on Skyler Beller's double and with 10-and-0 pitcher Logan Jurgensmeier on the mound to close it out in the last of the eighth it appeared the Blackhawks were going to pull out a win and keep their season alive.  Blake Wiltgen and Austin Herbst got Gehlen's winning rally started with singles and after Jurgensmeier hit Angel Chagolla to load the bases with one out, Livermore came to the plate.  Mitchell Flack earned the win in relief to improve to 8-and-0 for the season.  Hinton closes out a 23-and-4 season while the Cinderella Jays take a 13-and-12 record into Saturday's 1A District finals.  The game will be carried on KLEM, starting at 6:50.
