FRIDAY RESULTS - September 13

(high school football)

(SERGEANT BLUFF) -- 46 seconds was just the right amount of time for Levi TeBrink and the Bulldogs to navigate 82 yards for the winning touchdown as Le Mars scored on a Hail Mary pass on the game's final play to beat Sergeant Bluff-Luton 36-34 Friday night in a Class 3A district-two game at Sergeant Bluff.  S-B-L had taken the lead with a time-consuming, 66-yard march in eleven plays, scoring on a Bret Tomoson 12 yard run to take a 34-30 lead.  The Bulldogs returned the kick-off to their own 18 yard line and with 46 seconds to play and two timeouts, set out to try to pull out a miracle.  Le Mars opened the final drive with a trick play that worked for 42 yards when Chris Hatting lateraled the center snap to Levi TeBrink, who waiting along the Bulldog sideline behind his offensive line.  TeBrink scampered up the sideline to the Warrior 40 yard line with 32 seconds to play.  After three failed pass attempts Le Mars had one more try with seven seconds to play.  TeBrink heaved the final pass attempt to the end zone and senior Chris Hatting out-fought several defenders for the game-winning catch and the Bulldogs pulled out a 36-34 road win, spoiling Sergeant Bluff-Luton's homecoming.  The TD reception was the third for Hatting in the fourth quarter as Le Mars rallied from a 28-16 deficit.  TeBrink and Hatting also hooked up on scoring passes of 27 and six yards earlier in the final quarter.  Le Mars recovered from a safety on their first series of the night to score on a one yard run by Beau Ohm and a 28-yard TeBrink-to-Danny Ahlers pass for a 16-2 lead after one quarter.  S-B-L tied the game with second quarter touchdown runs by Austin Evans and Brett Tomoson for a 16-16 halftime tie.  The Warriors took a 22-16 lead on their first possession after halftime on a 35 yard run by Matt George and extended the lead to 28-16 a minute into the fourth quarter on a three yard run by Tomoson.  The Bulldogs then scored on their final three possessions of the game to literally snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.  The win improves Le Mars to 1-and-2 for the season as they come home to host top-rated Bishop Heelan Friday in their homecoming game.

(LE MARS) -- Blake Wiltgen rallied the Gehlen Catholic Jays to a 25-19 upset win over number-ten South O'Brien Friday night as the two teams opened Class 1A district one play at Jim Lorenzen Field.  Wiltgen threw four TD-passes and finished 15-of-19 for 169 yards.  Aaron Jentz and Colton Kneip had six pass catches each for Gehlen with Kneip hauling in three scoring passes and Jentz caught the other scoring toss.  Gehlen led 12-6 at halftime, but fell behind 13-12 two minutes into the second half after Zac Nieman scored for the Wolverines on a 16 yard run to cap South O'Brien's first drive of the second half.  Wiltgen then connected on a pair of scoring passes to Colton Kneip to put the Jays in front to stay at 25-13 with five minutes to play in the game.  South O'Brien scored on a Brett Puhrmann-to-Kelvan Lansink TD pass with 2:22 to play to narrow the deficit to 25-19 but the Jays were able to hold on for the upset.  Gehlen improves to 1-and-2 for the season as the Jays prepare to travel to Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn next Friday night.  The game will be carried on KLEM starting at 6:45 with the Tony Gunter pregame show.
