TUESDAY RESULTS - November 12

(volleyball)

(CEDAR RAPIDS) -- Top-rated Harlan rebounded after losing the first set to beat Le Mars three games-to-one Tuesday at the U-S Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, ending the Lady Bulldogs season.  The scores were 22-25, 25-8, 25-18, 25-20.  Junior middle hitter Jess Schaben connected for 33 kills on 57 attacks for a hitting percentage of 50.9% for the Cyclones.  Sophomore Taylor Frederick added 14 kills and Elle Kloewer 8.  Senior Madison Heidebrink closed out her Le Mars career with 20 kills with junior Holly Schneider adding 11 for the Lady Bulldogs.  Heidebrink and Schneider had 16 digs each.  Britney Thompson dished out 37 assists.  Schneider had four blocks and sophomore Alison Wilken had 3.  Heidebrink led Le Mars on the serving line with 16-of-16 with one ace while senior Hailey Purves was 12-of-12 and Schneider finished 10-of-10.  Le Mars finished 66-of-72 serving with two aces while Harlan was a tidy 92-of-96 with five aces.  Le Mars finishes the season at 24-and-13 while Harlan advances to Thursday's semifinals with a record of 35-and-4.

WEDNESDAY RESULTS - November 13

(volleyball)

(CEDAR RAPIDS) -- Number-three Sumner-Fredericksburg advanced to the 2A semifinals with a 3-to-1 quarterfinal round win over seventh-rated Hinton Wednesday at the State volleyball tournament in Cedar Rapids.  The scores were 25-17, 25-22, 15-25, 25-19.  Kally Frisch led the Cougars with 20 kills while Jaydlin Seehase added 11.  Kasey Reuter had 21 kills, 11 digs and was 15-of-16 serving with three aces to lead the Blackhawks. Lauren Hedlund had 11 kills, six blocks and was 12-of-14 serving with one ace and Tori Bishop added 10 kills, 2 blocks and finished 16-of-17 serving with two aces.  The Cougars' libero, Ashley Larson was a defensive force on Sumner-Fredericksburg's back row with 18 digs.  Hinton finishes the season at 26-and-8.

(CEDAR RAPIDS) -- Fifth-rated Gehlen Catholic won their 1A quarterfinal round match 3-to-1 Wednesday over number-six Stanton, 25-15, 25-18, 20-25, 25-22, to advance to the semifinals for the third time in the last four Class 1A State tournaments.  The :Lady Jays will take a 24-and-11 record into Thursday's semifinal match against top-rated Holy Trinity Catholic (46-and-4) at 6 p.m.  The match will be carried on KLEM starting at 5:50.  Morgan Whitehead led a balanced attack force for Gehlen with 16 kills.  Hannah Kessenich added 11 kills, Alison Schnepf 10 and Bailey Wiltgen 9.  Whitehead and Wiltgen had 13 digs each with Miranda Bunkers adding another nine.  Wiltgen had nine of Gehlen's 17 ace serves, connecting on 19-of-22 attempts.  Whitehead added three aces on 10-of-14 serves while Jill Kessenich and Caitlin Murphy added two aces each.

THURSDAY RESULTS - November 14

(volleyball)

(CEDAR RAPIDS) -- Top-rated Holy Trinity Catholic held off an up-set bid by fifth-rated Gehlen Catholic to win their 1A semifinal match three games-to-one Thursday at the State volleyball tournament in Cedar Rapids.  The scores were 24-26, 25-21, 25-14, 25-21.  Mikaela Foecke, the Crusaders' 6'4" junior hitting standout, drilled 35 kills to lead Holy Trinity into the finals Friday against number-two Janesville.  Foecke also had four aces on 18-of-19 serving.  Madlyn Orton added 10 kills and two blocks and Lauren Pothitakis had 16 digs while Kristin Brinck had 13.  Brinck was 20-of-20 serving with one ace, Maria Vonderhaar was 18-of-18 serving with one ace and dished out 43 assists.  For Gehlen, Bailey Wiltgen led the way with 14 kills, nine digs and was 17-of-17 serving with three aces.  Morgan Whitehead had 13 kills, nine digs, two blocks and was 11-of-12 serving with one ace.  Hannah Kessenich had eight kills and three blocks and Alison Schnepf added six kills.  Taylor Peters was 23-of-25 serving with five aces and dished out 19 assists while Mariah McCarty had 20 assists and two blocks.  Jill Kessenich had 12 digs and Miranda Bunkers eight.  The Lady Jays end the season at 24-and-12 and will lose nine seniors off their tournament roster.
