(AKRON) -- Morgan Whitehead got behind the defense to score a basketball with 34-seconds to play to extend a two-point lead to four and then Caitlin Murphy came up with a steal and lay-in moments later to give Gehlen Catholic a 40-34 advantage and the Lady Jays held off Akron-Westfield to win 40-36 in Akron Tuesday night.  The game was the War Eagle Conference opener for both teams and keeps Gehlen unbeaten at 3-and-0 for the season.  The Westerners led for much of the first two and a-half quarters before Hannah Sitzmann's three-point play with 2:46 to play in the third quarter gave Gehlen a 22-21 lead.  The Lady Jays increased that lead to 28-21 by the end of the quarter.  A-W rallied to tie the game at 34-all with 1:13 to play before Caitlin Murphy hit the go-ahead bucket with 55-seconds left.  Akron-Westfield, which fell to 2-and-2 for the season, got a game-high 16 points from Sarah Schroeder and nine from Kayla Tindall.  Carli Murphy paced Gehlen's scoring with ten with Morgan Whitehead and Caitlin Murphy adding eight each.

The number-two ranked Gehlen boys never trailed in beating Akron-Westfield 64-31 to improve to 4-and-0 for the season.  The Jays had four players in double figures, led by Ryan Stoll and Solomon Freking with 12 each, Lucas Hunt added 11 and Jarod Steffes ten.  Caleb Colt had eight for the Westerners, who fall to 0-and-3 for the season.

(LE MARS) -- Emmetsburg kept the Le Mars girls winless at 0-and-3, claiming a 42-33 victory in the Lakes Conference opener for both schools.  Alexa Naig led the E-Hawks with 15 with Ashton Connelly adding 14.  Kassidy Rieken had 13 for Le Mars.

NEW YORK (AP) - Florida State quarterback Jameis (JAYM'-ihs) Winston is the second freshman to win the Heisman Trophy, one year after Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel (man-ZEHL') captured it in his first season. Winston set FBS freshman records with 3,820 yards passing and 38 touchdown passes while leading the No. 1-ranked Seminoles to a 13-0 record and berth in the BCS championship game. His 190.6 passer efficiency rating is tops in the country and on pace to set an NCAA record.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The University of Texas has announced that Mack Brown is stepping down after 16 seasons as head football coach but will coach the Longhorns in the Alamo Bowl against Oregon on Dec. 30. Brown went 158-47 after leaving North Carolina for Austin, Texas, in 1997. He enjoyed great success while the Longhorns went 101-16 with one national championship from 2001-09, but the team has gone just 30-20 since.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - The annual Army-Navy game has gone to the Midshipmen for the 12th straight year as quarterback Keenan Reynolds ran for three touchdowns in a 34-7 rout of the Cadets. Reynolds has 29 rushing touchdowns, breaking the single-season mark for a quarterback previously shared by Ricky Dobbs of Navy and Kansas State's Collin Klein. Army fumbled five times and was intercepted once in its fifth straight defeat.
