(REMSEN) -- Gehlen Catholic picked up right where they left off in December, winning both ends of a War Eagle Conference basketball doubleheader at Remsen St. Mary's Friday night in the first games for both schools in the New Year.  The Gehlen girls improved to 7-and-1 for the season and 4-and-1 in the W-E-C with a 52-34 victory.  The Lady Jays led by six at the half and opened the second half with an 8-0 run to gain the upper hand for the rest of the night.  Hannah Sitzmann had 16 points to pace the Gehlen scoring attack with Caitlin Murphy adding 10.  Alexis Bunkers had 14 for the Lady Hawks and Lyndsie Schorg dropped in 11.  St. Mary's falls to 3-and-5 for the season and 0-and-4 in league play.

The Gehlen boys beat St. Mary's 63-39 for their ninth straight win in the series.  The Jays stay unbeaten at 9-and-0 for the season and 5-and-0 in W-E-C.  Gehlen never trailed, using a 10-0 run early in the game to break away from a 2-all tie and led by 15 after the first two quarters.  The Jays outscored the Hawks 22-8 in the first nine minutes of the second half to take a 29-point lead early in the fourth quarter before settling on a 24-point victory.  Jarod Steffes led a balanced Gehlen scoring attack with 14 points while Ryan Stoll and Solomon Freking added 10 each and Alex Kellen and Lucas Hunt scored nine apiece.  Matt Wesselmann led the Hawks with 10, Jacob Wesselmann had nine and Colin Schroeder eight.  St. Mary's falls to 4-and-4, dropping their fourth in a row, while slipping to 0-and-4 in league play.

SATURDAY RESULTS - January 4

(high school basketball)

(LE MARS) -- Dave Irwin's Le Mars Bulldogs opened the New Year by taking out an old neamisis.  Le Mars upset No. 6 (3A) Bishop Heelan 72-61 Saturday night before a near capacity crowd at the Bulldogs gym.  The victory halted a nine-game winning streak in the series for Heelan and marked just the second victory in the last 26 meetings for Le Mars against the Crusaders.  The Bulldogs used a balanced scoring attack to hand the Crusaders their second loss in six games.  Tyler Borchers led the way with 20 points, Colan Borchers had a career-high 17, Tyler Paulson added 15 and Jake Irwin 11.  DeAndre Burnside led Heelan with 17.  Le Mars held Heelan scoreless for five minutes in the second quarter to erase a 21-20 deficit after the first quarter and led 32-28 at halftime.  The lead ballooned to 52-41 after three quarters and to 16 with 2:35 to play.  Heelan sent Le Mars to the free throw line 24 times in the fourth quarter in a desperate attempt to catch up.  Although the Bulldogs missed ten of those 24 attempts, they hit enough of them to fend off Heelan's attempts to rally.  The Crusaders pulled to within ten with 1:28 to play before falling behind by 14 again with 48 seconds left.  Le Mars finished 24-of-38 from the free throw line.  The Bulldogs take a 5-and-2 record to Estherville Tuesday night to play 7-and-2 E-L-C in a Lakes Conference match-up.

The No. 2 (4A) Bishop Heelan girls (8-0) ran off the final ten points of the game to increase an 11-point lead with 3:48 to play to a 63-42 victory over the 1-and-7 Le Mars girls Saturday night.  The Lady Bulldogs trailed by 18 at halftime but opened the second half on a 9-1 run to draw to within ten at the 4:45 mark of the third quarter.  Le Mars stayed to within 10 to 13 points for much of the second half before going scoreless over the final 3:48 of the game.  Kassidy Rieken had 14 points for Le Mars and Holly Schneider checked in with 11.  Kacey Hovden scored a career-best nine in her first start and Emily Ahlers added 8.  Jenna Bork led all scorers with 19 for Heelan, Megan Todd added 16 and Tristan Beaulieu 12.  The Crusaders dropped in nine three-pointers but hit only 33% of their shots.
