(PISGAH)--A sea of tubes of trees are reminders of the destruction from a tornado at the Loess Hills State Forest  near Onawa two years ago.

The tornado that struck the Little Sioux Scout Ranch near Onawa also cut a path through the adjoining 4,000-acre Preparation Canyon Unit of the state forest and the 340-acre Preparation Canyon State Park. Some of the trees destroyed pre-dated the Declaration of Independence.

The final step of a reforestation project took place in May and early June. A mix of 8,000 bur oak, red oak, white oak and black walnut seedings were replanted by hand throughout the damaged area. Some tree seedings were planted in the middle of a pile of tree tops and limbs that will serve as protection from deer. All the seedlings were enclosed in four-foot plastic tubes to protect them from deer.

Brent Olson is the area forester for the Loess HIlls State Forest. Olson says in 15 to 20 years, people will barely recognize that a tornado went through the area.

The park reopened Memorial Day weekend and more than 500 people visited or used the park and adjoining state forest area.

Hiking trails are in the process of being repaired and signed. The picnic areas have been reseeded.
