Sports Minute

HOUSTON (AP) - The Chicago Cubs have added an outfielder for their playoff run, getting Austin Jackson from Seattle for a player to be named. Jackson was hitting .272 with eight homers and 38 RBIs in 107 games this season. He gives the Cubs' outfield depth and defense as the team tries to nail down its first postseason berth since 2008.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Julius Thomas could miss multiple games to start the regular season because of an injured right hand. Thomas broke a bone in the back of his hand during the preseason opener against Pittsburgh. He initially was supposed to be back for the regular-season opener Sept. 13 against Carolina, but general manager Dave Caldwell says Thomas would be sidelined four weeks if he requires surgery.

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - Washington coach Jay Gruden has announced that Kirk Cousins will be his starting quarterback for the season, saying the Michigan State product gives the Skins the best chance to win. Cousins was selected over Robert Griffin III, who was thought to have the job until he was held out of Saturday's preseason game because of a concussion suffered the previous week.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - The Buffalo Bills are turning their offense over to Tyrod Taylor following a three-way quarterback competition. Taylor won the job over former starter EJ Manuel and Matt Cassel, a 10-year journeyman who was acquired in an offseason trade with Minnesota.  The Bills have released 34-year old running back Fred Jackson, who spent nine seasons in Buffalo.

NEW YORK (AP) - A final decision on Tom Brady's punishment now rests in the hands of Judge Richard Berman after the Patriots quarterback and Commissioner Roger Goodell failed to reach an agreement yesterday. Berman says he expects to rule as early as today whether Brady must serve a four-game suspension to start the season for his alleged role in using underinflated footballs during the playoffs last season. Goodell upheld the suspension in July, and the NFL Players Association wants the punishment nullified.
