TUESDAY RESULTS – July 6

(high school baseball)

Le Mars (13-13/8-6) 5 Cherokee 4

(CHEROKEE) -- Mike Ahlers' fourth home run of the season decided it and Gage Crosgrove claimed his first win in five decisions this season with a complete game pitching performance as Le Mars held off Cherokee 5-4 Tuesday night in Cherokee.  Ahlers greeted Braves' reliver Cody Ege with a lead off home run in the third inning to lift the Bulldogs to a 5-2 lead.  That would be the only hit off Ege, who struck out nine of the next twelve hitters he faced in a four inning relief stint to tune up for the tournament opener Saturday for Cherokee.  Le Mars erased a 2-0 deficit with a four-run second inning off starter Matt Pitts.  A pair of two-out walks and a single by Eric Havey loaded the bases.  Keaton Rowe drove in one run with a single followed by Jeremy Bohlke's two-run single.  Tanner Dowling capped the scoring with a RBI single, one of three hits for Dowling.  Cosgrove, who has been averaging about eight walks a game this season, limited the Braves to one free pass Tuesday night while scattering seven hits.  He retired Division I prospect Cody Ege on a foul out down the left field line to end the game with the potential tying run at second base.  The Braves were held hitless after a fourth inning double by Zac Woods drew Cherokee to within 5-4.  Le Mars ends the Lakes Conference season at 8-and-6.

(high school softball)

Le Mars (24-10/9-5) 11 Cherokee 4

(CHEROKEE) -- Le Mars closed out the regular season with their 24th win of the season, an 11-4 pounding of Cherokee in a Lakes Conference softball matchup in Cherokee Tuesday night.  The 24 wins matches last year's school record win total and gives the Lady Bulldogs a 9-and-5 Lakes Conference finish.  Kelby Klein and Erin Kommes drove in two runs each for Le Mars while Klein led the hitting attack with three hits.  Jordan Heidebrink scattered ten hits and picked up the complete game victory in the pitching circle.  Le Mars opens 3A Regional play Saturday against M-O-C/Floyd Valley at the Bulldog Complex with a 24-and-10 record.

(LE MARS) -- Blake Wiltgen and Aaron Schlesser combined on a four-hitter and struckout eleven as Gehlen closed out the regular season with a 6-4 victory over Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn Wednesday night in Le Mars.  Wiltgen returned to winning form with a three-hit, seven strikeout performance through five innings.  The Jays scored four runs in the fourth inning, taking advantage of two walks, two hits, three wild pitches and three passed balls to go in front 6-0.  Michael Whitehead, Devin Groenhagen and Michael Lemoruex led a nine-hit attack with two hits each for Gehlen.  The Jays closed out the regular season at 16-and-12 and finish at 12-and-9 in the War Eagle Conference.  Gehlen plays Remsen St. Mary's next Tuesday in Remsen at 7 pm in the 1A Districts.

Harlan 8 Le Mars (14-14) 4, 8 innings

(LE MARS) -- Number-nine rated Harlan scored four runs in the eighth inning Friday night to escape with an 8-4 victory over Le Mars at the Bulldog Complex in a non-league baseball matchup.  Le Mars, making a bid for their second straight win over a state-rated team this week, tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Bryce Dahm led a six-hit Bulldog hitting attack with two hits.  Le Mars played without leading hitter Keatin Rowe.  Mike Ahlers took the loss in relief of starter Judd Herzberg.  The two combined for a five-hitter with nine strikeouts but eight walks and a season-high eleven Bulldog errors eventually decided Le Mars' fate in this one.  The Bulldogs return to regular season action Monday at Sioux City West.
