ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Bobby Abreu had three hits and drove in four runs to help the Los Angeles Angels defeat the Kansas City Royals 6-4 last night. The Angels hung on to win for just the third time in their last seven games after blowing most of a 5-0 lead.

HOUSTON (AP) Rookie Chris Johnson drove in three runs, including two in Houston's six-run seventh inning and the Astros clubbed Atlanta 10-4. Braves rookie Jason Heyward became the fourth player to homer on his 21st birthday, joining Ted Williams, Frank Robinson and Alex Rodriguez.

UNDATED (AP) Ilya Kovalchuk (KOH'-vuhl-chuhk) is already talking to the New Jersey Devils about a new contract. The Russian star became an unrestricted free agent Monday when an arbitrator ruled that the NHL acted correctly in voiding a landmark $102 million contract that Kovalchuk and the Devils agreed to on July 19. The NHL had rejected the 17-year contract, saying the longest deal in league history violated its salary cap.

ATLANTA (AP) Tony Dungy (DUHN'-jee) believes in mentoring and says it puts people on the right path including his most famous pupil, Philadelphia quarterback Michael Vick. On a national tour to promote his new book on mentoring, Dungy told The Associated Press on Monday that Vick still has a lot to learn about his image. Dungy says even if Vick isn't doing something illegal, he still can make better decisions to stay out of harm's way.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) Coach Bob Bradley will resume conversations with the U.S. Soccer Federation about his future following tonight's exhibition against Brazil. British media speculated Monday that Bradley would be considered for the Aston Villa job that opened when Martin O'Neill quit yesterday, five days ahead of the club's opener.
