TUESDAY RESULTS - January 20

(high school basketball)

HINTON -- The 14th-ranked (2A) Hinton girls scored the first 21 points of the game and never looked back as the Blackhawks beat Gehlen Catholic for the 33rd straight time 52-18 Tuesday night in a non-conference basketball match-up in Hinton.  The Lady Jays were outscored 23-2 in the opening quarter and then finished the game by going scoreless for the final ten minutes as Hinton outscored them 22-6 in the second half.  Kailey Burke led the Blackhawks with 23 points and Abby Cook finished with 18.  Carli Murphy had six for Gehlen as the Lady Jays fall to 4-and-10 for the season.  Hinton improves to 13-and-1.

The No. 3 (1A) Gehlen Catholic boys withstood a 6-for-20 free throw shooting performance in the fourth quarter to hold off a late charge by Hinton for 70-60 victory.  It was the Jays seventh straight win in the series.  The Blackhawks went on a 16-4 run midway through the second half to trim a 17-point third quarter deficit to five with 5:05 to play before the Jays made just enough plays to prevail.  Gehlen shot 69% for the night, connecting on 27-of-39 shots from the floor.  The Jays were 8-for-9 in both the second and third quarters.  Ryan Stoll led another balanced scoring night for Gehlen with 19 points, while Alex Kellen had 15, Jarod Steffes 14 and Solomon Freking 10.  Sophomore Jay Small led all scorers with 26 points to pace  Hinton with Colton Schau adding 13.  Gehlen improves to 13-and-0 with their second victory of the season over Hinton while the Blackhawks slip to 9-and-4.

Gehlen travels to Remsen St. Mary's Friday night and Hinton plays South O'Brien as both schools return to War Eagle Conference action.

LE MARS -- The Le Mars girls avenged a three-point loss at Emmetsburg last month with a 40-35 win at home over the E-Hawks Tuesday night.  The Lady Bulldogs led by five at halftime but Emmetsburg had battled back to tie the game at 29-all heading into the fourth quarter.  Kassidy Rieken had ten points to lead Le Mars with Jen Schneider adding nine and Holly Schneider 8.  Alexa Naig had 14 for Emmetsburg.  Le Mars evens their record at 7-and-7 and 5-and-3 in the Lakes Conference.  The Lady Bulldogs have won 7 of their last 10 games.

Tyler Borchers scored 18 points to lead the fifth-ranked (3A) Le Mars boys to a 63-28 romp over the Emmetsburg boys Tuesday.  The win keeps the Bulldogs a half-game ahead of Spirit Lake and Western Christian in the Lakes Conference race with a 7-and-1 league mark and a 10-and-2 season record.  The Bulldogs had things pretty well in hand by halftime, leading 36-13.  Trent Hilbrands dropped in 15 for the Dogs and Pete Meis added 12.  Le Mars travels to Hull Friday night to meet Western Christian in a key conference match-up.

FRIDAY RESULTS - January 23

(high school basketball)

REMSEN  -- Gehlen Catholic overcame an early 15-2 deficit to clip Remsen St. Mary's 50-46 in a War Eagle Conference girls basketball match-up in Remsen Friday night.  Carli Murphy scored nine of her 13 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Lady Jays down the stretch.  All 13 of her team-high points came after halftime after battling through foul troubles in the first half.  Taylor Peters and Grace Auchstetter added 12 each for Gehlen.  Auchstetter hit four three's in the second quarter to help the Lady Jays wipe out the 13-point first quarter deficit and forge a 22-all tie at halftime.  Auchstetter suffered a knee injury just before halftime that ended her career night.  Alexis Bunkers hit seven three-pointers and led St. Mary's with 24 points.  Gehlen Catholic improves to 5-and-10 and 4-and-3 in the conference while Remsen St. Mary's slips to 4-and-11 for the season and 2-and-5 in the W-E-C.

The third-rated (1A) Gehlen Catholic boys had to overcome a seven-point deficit early in the third quarter to stay unbeaten with a 63-52 win over a scrappy Remsen St. Mary's club.  The Hawks led 30-28 at halftime and opened the second half with a Brady Harpenau bucket and a three-pointer by Jacob Wesselmann for a 35-28 lead.  It's the biggest second half deficit the Jays have faced all season.  Never one to panic though, the senior dominated Gehlen team battled back to take a 46-44 lead after three quarters and never trailed in the fourth period, outscoring the Hawks 17-8 to improve to 14-and-0 for the season and 7-and-0 in the War Eagle Conference.  Ryan Stoll led the Jays with 17 points with Alex Kellen adding 14 and Lucas Hunt 10.  Freshman Nick Ruden had 15 for St. Mary's while Brady Harpenau, Jacob Wesselmann and Ethan Biezuns had ten points each.  The Hawks fall to 9-and-5 for the season and 3-and-4 in the W-E-C.

HULL -- In the battle of two state-rated boys basketball titans Friday night in Hull, number-five (3A) Le Mars rallied past number-two (2A) Western Christian 53-49.  Tyler Paulson's two free throws with 4.6 seconds to play sealed the outcome.  The Wolfpack led for much of the first three quarters of the game before the Bulldogs rallied in the final period, outscoring Western 18-10, to overcome a 39-34 deficit going into the final quarter.  Le Mars trailed 27-20 at the half and fell behind by ten in the opening minute of the second half.  Back-to-back three's by Tyler Paulson and Mitch Sitzmann gave Le Mars a 45-41 lead with five minute to play.  Sophomore Trent Hilbrands had 14 points to pace a balanced Le Mars scoring attack with Tyler Paulson adding 13, Tyler Borchers 12 and Caleb Cline 10.  Josh Van Lingen had 15 points to lead Western Christian with Taylor Miedema adding 14.  The season sweep by Le Mars marks only the second time in the history of the series between the two longtime rivals that the Bulldogs have won both games over Western.  Le Mars improves to 11-and-2 for the season and 8-and-1 in the Lakes Conference while Western Christian, the defending 2A State champs, fall to 11-and-2 and 6-and-2 in the Lakes.  Western plays at Spirit Lake Tuesday night while Le Mars travels to Spencer.

The second-rated (2A) Western Christian girls stayed unbeaten in Lakes Conference play at 8-and-0 with a 67-26 win over the Le Mars girls Friday night.  The Wolfpack grabbed control early while posting their 19th straight win in the series.  Kenzie Bousema had 14 points to pace the Western offensive attack with Jamie Gesink dropping in ten.  Workhorse Kassidy Rieken of Le Mars led all scorers with 15.  The Wolfpack are now 12-and-2 for the season.  Le Mars slips to 7-and-8 with a 5-and-4 league record.
