SPORTS HEADLINES

(sports headlines - December 27)

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Drew Brees (breez) is the NFL's single-season
record-holder for passing yards after throwing for 307 in the New
Orleans Saints' 45-16 pounding of Atlanta. Brees has already passed
for 5,087 yards with one game left this season, three more yards
than the old mark set by Miami's Dan Marino in 1984. Brees also
passed for four touchdowns and Malcolm Jenkins returned a fumble
for a TD as the Saints clinched the NFC South.

IRVING, Texas (AP) - It appears quarterback Tony Romo will be
available when the Dallas Cowboys visit the New York Giants this
Sunday with the NFC East title on the line. The swelling is going
down on Romo's bruised throwing hand, which was injured during
Saturday's loss to Philadelphia. He could be ready to practice
tomorrow and should play this weekend.

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - James Franklin ran for two touchdowns and
ran for two more as Missouri whipped North Carolina 41-24 in the
Independence Bowl at Shreveport, Louisiana. Franklin accounted for
274 total yards and helped the Tigers set an Independence Bowl
record with 31 points in the first half. Kendial Lawrence added 108
rushing yards for the Tigers, who gained 337 yards on the ground.

NEW YORK (AP) - Syracuse sits atop the AP men's basketball poll
for a third straight week while the next six teams also maintained
their positions. The Orange received 54 first-place votes from the
65-member media panel and is followed by Ohio State, Kentucky,
Louisville, North Carolina, Baylor and Duke. Missouri, Connecticut
and Florida round out the top 10.

TORONTO (AP) - The Toronto Maple Leafs have officially announced
a new contract for head coach Ron Wilson, who tweeted Christmas
morning that he had received an extension. Wilson is in the final
season of a four-year contract and currently has the Maple Leafs
ranked sixth in the Eastern Conference after missing the playoffs
