MONDAY RESULTS – November 28

(basketball)

(MOVILLE) -- Gehlen Catholic opened the 2011-2012 basketball season with a split of their doubleheader against Woodbury Central Monday night in Moville.

In the girls game, the seventh-rated Gehlen Catholic Lady Jays closed the game on a 14-4 run to pull away for a 53-39 win.  Kaitlin Langel had 16 points for Gehlen with Amber Timmins and Steph Rohe adding 12 each.  Ellen Gallagher had ten to pace Woodbury Central.

In the boys game, Woodbury Central broke away from a 23-22 halftime lead by outscoring Gehlen 37-22 in the second half for a 60-44 victory over the Jays.  Brady Crichton led the Wildcats with 19 points while Paul Gallagher contributed 14.  Tervor Bouma had 13 to pace Gehlen with Zach Wurth adding ten and Michael Whitehead nine.  The Jays were just 4-of-20 from the free throw line.

The Gehlen guys and gals travel to Remsen-Union Tuesday night in a twinbill that will be carried on KLEM starting at 5:55.

Le Mars beat Sergeant Bluff-Luton 2356-to-1888 in girls action and 2597-to-2498 in boys play Monday at Sweet 16 Lanes in Le Mars.  For the girls, Danielle Hystad rolled a 362 series score with Katie Pope bowling a 327 series and Susie Haack a 308.  For the boys, Brock Hofland finished with a 384 series, Austin DuBrall a 364, and Cody Wurth a 349.

 

 

 

 

TUESDAY RESULTS – November 29

(basketball)

(REMSEN) -- The Gehlen Catholic Jays swept a doubleheader from Remsen-Union Tuesday night, 47-44 in the girls game and 61-58 in double overtime in the boys game.

The Gehlen girls spotted R-U a 9-0 lead before rallying for their second victory in as many nights.  Amber Timmins' three-point play with twenty seconds to play broke a 44-all tie and sent the Lady Jays to a 47-44 win.  Timmins finished with 19 points and 15 rebounds to lead Gehlen while Steph Rohe added eleven points and Kaitlin Langel ten.  Brittany Sudtelgte had 14 points for the Rockets and Rachel West added eleven.  The seven-ranked Lady Jays improve to 2-and-0 for the season.

In the boys game, Michael Whitehead hit a key three-pointer with 2:27 to play in the second overtime to give Gehlen the lead for good as the Jays posted a 61-58 victory.  Zach Wurth and Whitehead hit a free throw each in the final 1:11 to keep the Jays on top.  The game featured eight ties and seven lead changes.  Whitehead finished with a career-high 30 points for Gehlen with Conor Kneip adding eleven.  Wurth had nine points and 15 rebounds.  Alex Hansen led Remsen-Union with 20 points and Tanner Hilbrands contributed 15 before fouling out.  Gehlen evens their record at 1-and-1.  Tuesday night's action was the first for both the R-U guys and gals.

Gehlen hosts Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn Friday night in the Jays' home opener.  Coverage on KLEM begins at 5:55.

(LE MARS) -- The Le Mars Bulldogs roared to a 20-point halftime lead and went on to win their season opener at home against Denison-Schleswig Tuesday night, 73-52.  Austin Homan led the way with 20 points while Jordan Eisma added 19 for the Bulldogs.  Denison-Schleswig's Derek Hal led all scorers with 23 points.  The Bulldogs are off until next Tuesday when they travel to Spirit Lake for their first girl/boy doubleheader of the season.

FRIDAY RESULTS – December 2

Le Mars opened the season at the Humboldt Invitational Friday night.  Atlantic won the team title but the rest of the team standings were not available Friday night.  For Le Mars, Nick Madsen finished second at 106 pounds, Alex Hermes was third at 285, C.J. Singer took fourth at 138, Tanner Small was fifth at 106, Jacob Johnson took fifth at 170, Chris Haman was sixth at 132 pounds, Bradley Hartman was sixth at 285, Tyler Gries was seventh at 145 and Mitch Weaver was seventh at 152.

(LE MARS) -- The seventh-ranked (Class 1A) Gehlen Catholic girls remained unbeaten at 3-and-0 Friday night, holding off number-12 (Class 1A) Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn 39-37 at the Bob Kneip Family gymnasium in Le Mars.  After four lead changes in the fourth quarter, the Lady Jays took the lead for good with 3:32 to play.  Gehlen led 39-35 with 56-seconds left after Steph Rohe hit a pair of free throws.  A Anna Wilcox basket with 17-seconds to play drew M-M-C to within 39-37 but the Eagles never got the ball back again.  Erica Dreckman of Marcus/M-C led all scorers with 18 points before fouling out in the final minute of play.  Steph Rohe finished with 15 points for Gehlen and Katelin Langel added 12.  Kayla Foreman had ten for M-M-C.  The Eagles fall to 2-and-1 for the season.

The Gehlen boys completed the non-league sweep of Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn with a 57-48 victory.  The Jays took the lead for good late in the first quarter although they were never able to put the Eagles completely away.  Gehlen's biggest lead reached 14 in the third quarter.  The Eagles closed to within six early in the fourth quarter.  Trevor Bouma led Gehlen with 25 points, hitting five three-pointers.  Conor Kneip added 11.  Dylan Spieler had 22 for M-M-C.  Gehlen improves to 2-and-1 for the season while the Eagles fall to 1-and-1.

Both teams open War Eagle Conference play Tuesday night with Gehlen travelling to Akron-Westfield and Marcus/M-C hosting Remsen-Union.
