(LE MARS) -- The Le Mars boys got back into the winning column Friday night, halting a two-game losing streak with a 61-44 win over Cherokee in Lakes Conference basketball action at Carey gym. The Le Mars girls fell 55-50 to Cherokee as their losing streak extended to six straight.
In the girls game, Cherokee avenged a seven-point loss in early January to Le Mars with a split of the season series. The Braves hit 17-of-28 from the foul line to hold off the Lady Bulldogs for the five-point victory. The game was close throughout with Cherokee leading 26-20 at halftime and 38-36 after three quarters. Megan Hummel had 16 points to pace a balanced Cherokee attack. Megan Carlson added 13 and Katie Sambrano netted 11. Emily Anderson connected for 15 points for Le Mars. Senior Alex Schuett had seven points and 16 rebounds in her last game at Carey gym. Leah Clement had eight points for the Lady Bulldogs and Erica Westhoff added another seven. Le Mars falls to 6-and-13 for the season and 4-and-8 in Lakes Conference play. The Lady Bulldogs close out the regular season with two road games next week, Tuesday at Estherville and Friday at Spencer.
In the boys game, Paxton Strub and Austin Homan again led the Bulldogs to victory scoring 18 and 16 points respectively. Le Mars jumped out to a 10-2 lead and never looked back, leading 35-19 by halftime and coasting in with a 17-point win. The Bulldogs improve to 10-and-2 in the Lakes Conference and 13-and-4 for the season. Next week's road games at Estherville and Spencer close out Lakes Conference play for both the guys and gals.
(LE MARS) -- The Gehlen girls avenged a two-point season opening loss at Marcus in early December with a 51-50 win over the Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn Eagles Friday night in a War Eagle Conference meeting in Le Mars. Steph Rohe's three free throws in the final 43 seconds of the game helped Gehlen fend off a determined rally by the Eagles. Gehlen used a 13-0 first quarter run to open up a 33-22 halftime lead. But M-M-C outscored the Lady Jays 15-4 in the third quarter to forge a 37-all tie after three quarters. Gehlen inched ahead by six at the midway mark of the fourth quarter and withstood a three-point basket by Stephanie Specht with 1.5 seconds to play to cut into a 4-point lead. M-M-C's Erica Dreckman led all scorers with 17 points with Specht finishing with eleven. Gehlen countered with a balanced attack getting 14 from Rohe, 13 from Katelin Langel and 12 from Amber Timmins. Gehlen improves to 13-and-5 for the season and 8-and-1 in the War Eagle Confernce. The Lady Jays travel to Kingsley Monday for a make-up date with Kingsley-Pierson and close out the regular season Tuesday night back at the Gehlen gym against Akron-Westfield in their final W-E-C game of the season. Gehlen opens 1A Regional play next Saturday at home against the winner of Thursday's game between Kingsley-Pierson and Remsen St. Mary's.
The Gehlen boys returned to the win column after two losses with a 73-42 romp past the Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn guys Friday. The Jays led 39-36 midway through the third quarter before closing the game with 34-6 run to win going away. Gehlen connected on 19-of-27 shots in the second half, good for 70% shooting. The Eagles hit on just 2-of-their 26 second half shots (8%). M-M-C missed all 12 of their fourth quarter shot attempts. Michael Whitehead had a career-best 20 points off the Gehlen bench to lead all scorers. Zach Wurth added 13, Trevor Bouma had 11 and Conor Kneip ten. Neal Bunt had ten for the Eagles. The Gehlen boys are 13-and-5 for the season and 7-and-2 in the W-E-C. Like the girls, Gehlen travels to Kingsley Monday for a make-up game and host Akron-Westfield Tuesday before closing out the regular season at home next Friday night against South O'Brien.
