MONDAY RESULTS - July 14

(high school baseball)

Le Mars (14-16) 12, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley 9

(LE MARS) -- Colan Borchers drove in four runs on a pair of hits and a sacrifice fly to lead Le Mars to a 12-9 non-conference baseball victory Monday afternoon over Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley at the Bulldog Complex.  Borchers' two-run double in the first put the Dogs in front 2-0 and Caleb Cline followed with another two-run double to make it 4-0.  The Nighthawks cut the lead to 4-2 in the second but the Bulldogs countered with four more runs in their half of the second.  Matt Ellefson homered to left, Mitch Timp added a RBI single and two runs scored on a RBI single by Cameron Leff followed by a error in the outfield.  After Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley closed to within 8-4 with two runs in the third, the Bulldogs added two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth for a 12-4 lead.  Dayton Rand had a RBI single in the fifth inning and Borchers added another run-scoring double.  In the sixth, Keaton Candor had a RBI double and Borchers added a sacrifice fly.  The Nighthawks collected six of their seven hits in the seventh and took advantage of two Bulldog errors to score five runs before reliever Dayton Rand was able to quell the rally.  Cameron Leff got the win, pitching five innings of one-hit ball.  But five walks and a pair of strikeouts ran his pitch count in excess of 100 pitches.  Rand worked the final two innings.  Le Mars improves to 14-and-16 and will close out the regular season Tuesday with a varsity game only at 6:30 against Denison-Schleswig at the Bulldog Complex.

CLASS 4A REGIONAL FINALS

(FORT DODGE)  -- Well it may have come a year later than everybody thought but the Le Mars Lady Bulldogs softball team is headed for the 4A State tournament next week!  Madison Heidebrink's two-out RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning drove in Holly Schneider from first base with the winning run and Le Mars stunned No. 2 Fort Dodge 3-2 Tuesday night in the 4A Regional finals at the Rogers Sports Complex in Fort Dodge.  It was Heidebrink's fourth hit of the night and her third RBI.  She tripled home a run in the third to tie the score at 1-1 and singled home a run in the fifth to again tie the game at 2-2.  Her double to the gap in right-center produced the improbable walk-off win.  Janessa Milbrodt threw a five-hitter with three walks and one strikeout to get the win in the pitching circle to improve to 11-and-10.  Le Mars (21-and-16) will play in their first-ever State softball tournament next Monday at 11:30 a.m. against top-rated Dallas Center-Grimes (38-and-1) in Fort Dodge.

SATURDAY RESULTS - July 19

CLASS 1A DISTRICT FINALS

(LE MARS) -- No. 5 Gehlen Catholic rallied from a 6-1 deficit to win 7-6 in a seventh inning walk-off against No. 4 Remsen St. Mary's Saturday night in the 1A District finals at Gehlen's Riverview Complex.  Solomon Freking's one-out single to left scored Austin Herbst from second base with the winner to cap an incredible rally by the Jays as they avenged two regular season losses to the Hawks.  Andrew Pottebaum's two-run double in the first inning gave St. Mary's a 2-0 head start.  Brady Heying's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first made it 2-1.  Starting pitcher's Matt Wesselmann for St. Mary's and Blake Wiltgen for Gehlen got locked in after that, matching zeros for the next three innings.  A pair of one out walks to the number eight and nine batters in the Hawks line-up opened the door to a four-run fifth inning by St. Mary's.  Erik Willman squeezed a run across with a second runner scoring when the throw to first base on the bunt attempt went down the right field line.  Elliott Conover and Andrew Pottebaum followed with RBI hits for a 6-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.  Gehlen proceeded to score six runs on eight hits in their final three at-bats.  Three runs scored in the fifth on RBI hits by Brady Heying, Blake Wiltgen and Mitchell Flack to trim the deficit to 6-4.  The Jays tied it in the sixth on a RBI ground out by Heying and a RBI double by Jarod Steffes.  The late game rally by the Jays was fueled by a pair of double plays to end both the sixth and seventh innings defensively.  Brady Heying (8-0) got the win in relief while Elliott Conover (6-3) took the loss.  Heying drove in three runs for the Jays and Lucas Hunt had three hits and scored three runs.  Andrew Pottebaum had three RBI's for Remsen St. Mary's.  The Hawks close out a 28-and-5 season while Gehlen Catholic improves to 28-and-3 and will meet Woodbury Central in the Sub-State finals Tuesday night at the Le Mars Community Bulldog Complex at 7 p.m.  The game will be carried on KLEM.  Gehlen handed the Wildcats an 11-0 setback in June at the J-Club Tournament.
