FRIDAY RESULTS - February 5

(high school basketball)

SPIRIT LAKE  -- No. 11 (3A) Spirit Lake closed the first half on a 17-4 run to seize control of their Lakes Conference girls basketball match-up with Le Mars Community Friday night and the Indians rolled to a 48-30 victory over the Lady Bulldogs to avenge an eight-point upset loss in Le Mars on January 8th.  Bailee Newman scored 16 points and freshman Anna Brown added 13 to lead the Indians while Katrina Engebretson netted nine for Le Mars.  The Lady Bulldogs fall to 7-and-12 for the season and 5-and-7 in league play.  Spirit Lake is now 13-and-7.

The Le Mars boys lost for only the second time in the last six games, dropping an 89-70 decision to No. 6 (3A) Spirit Lake Friday night.  The Bulldogs connected on seven three-pointers in the first quarter to take a 26-19 lead after the first eight minutes.  However, the Indians scored the first 13 points of the second quarter during a 24-2 surge to thwart any upset plans Le Mars may have been entertaining and led 45-34 at the half.  The Indians led by 15 after three quarters and by as many as 20 in the final quarter before sweeping the season series with an 18-point victory.  Iowa recruit, Ryan Kriener, led the Indians' scoring attack with 30 points with Billy Brown adding 19, Frankie Ramos 13 and Logan Backhaus 10.  Trent Hilbrands had 16 for the Bulldogs with James Brownmiller dropping in 15, Dylan Harms 14, and Will Pottebaum 12.  The two teams combined for 23 three-pointers.  Le Mars falls to 8-and-8 for the season and 7-and-5 in Lakes Conference play.  Spirit Lake improves to 16-and-3.

LE MARS -- Jay Small poured in 31 points to lead the Hinton Blackhawks to a 69-53 War Eagle Conference victory over Gehlen Catholic Friday night at the Ronald Fox Memorial gym in Le Mars.  Small drained seven three-pointers among his 11 field goals.  Collin Jurgensmeirer added 10.  Carson Kneip led Gehlen Catholic with 14 and Alec Langel had 10.  The Jays fall to 8-and-10 for the season and completed league play with a 6-and-6 record. Hinton improves to 12-and-6 for the season and 7-and-4 in league play.

The Hinton girls rolled to a dominating 62-5 victory over Gehlen Catholic Friday night to improve to 11-and-8 for the season and 8-and-3 in the W-E-C.  The Lady Jays trailed 22-2 after the first quarter and didn't score again until the fourth quarter, getting outscored 36-0 in the middle two quarters.  Gehlen shot a season worst 1-for-46 from the floor and 0-for-15 from the three-point arch.  The Lady Jays fall to 2-and-15 for the season and finished at 2-and-10 in the W-E-C.  State scoring leader, Kailey Burke, had 30 points to lead the Blackhawks.  Jolee Linden and Krayton Schnepf led Gehlen with two each.
