CLASS 3A BOYS DISTRICT SEMIFINALS

(LE MARS) -- You couldn't have scripted it any better!  Kyan Ludwig celebrated his 18th birthday by hitting a last second shot off the left baseline to lift the Le Mars BUlldogs to a 46-44 win over the Denison-Schleswig Monarchs in the 3A District Tournament semifinals at Carey gym Monday night.  Le Mars started off poorly, hitting 1-for-14 from the floor in the first quarter and falling behind 13-3 after the first eight minutes.  The Bulldogs had forged a tie by halftime at 18-all and led 34-32 heading into the fourth quarter.  A 6-0 run to begin the final quarter put Le Mars in front 40-32 three minutes into the final period.  But Denison-Schleswig fought back to tie the game at 44-all with 1:18 to play on a steal and layup by standout Ricky Torres.  Le Mars ran the clock down to the final second and took the final shot of the game.  Austin Homan led Le Mars with 18 points while Andrew Hrabik had 15 for the Monarchs.  Torres was checked to 12 on an outstanding defensive job by Le Mars senior Mike Ahlers, holding Torres to eight below his season average.  The 17-and-5 Bulldogs play Harlan at Denison Thursday in the District finals at 7 pm.

(DENISON) -- Mike Ahlers capped a career-best 16-point performance Thursday night by getting behind a full-court press defense by Harlan and scoring a break-away lay-up with 19 seconds to play as Le Mars squeezed by the Cyclones 54-52 to win the District two championship in Class 3A District Tournament action at Denison.  The Bulldogs rallied from a 48-42 deficit with 3:47 to play to advance to the Sub-State championship game Monday night.  Ahlers hit a base line jumper with 3:26 to play to cut the deficit to 48-44 and Austin Homan's three-pointer with 3:03 left in the game whittled the deficit to 48-47.  Ahlers tied it with a free throw at the 2:28 mark and Jordan Eisma capped an 8-0 run with a pair of free throws for a 50-48 lead with 1:44 to play.  Harlan forged the seventh tie of the night on an Adam Cave basket with 1:22 left.  A pair of free throws by Eisma put Le Mars in front to stay at 52-50 with 29 seconds left in the fourth quarter and after a travel call on Harlan Ahlers hit his break away lay-in for a 54-50 led.  Zach Osborne hit a pair of free throws with one second to play for Harlan to cut the Bulldog lead to 54-52.  Osborne intercepted a long in-bounds pass by Le Mars and did get a desperation shot away from behind half court but it missed the mark and Le Mars celebrated a hard-fought victory.  The game had 15 lead changes and six points was the most the two were ever separated.  After Ahlers' 16, Austin Homan had 10 and Eisma nine, all from the free throw line.  Jarod Juhl led Harlan with 13 and Jordan Schaben 12.  Le Mars takes an 18-and-5 record into Monday's Sub-State game against either Bishop Heelan or Glenwood.  Their game was snowed out in Council Bluffs Thursday night and they'll play Friday in Denison.
