MONDAY RESULTS - May 28

(softball)

Bishop Heelan 9 Le Mars (3-3) 3

(LE MARS) -- Bishop Heelan broke-up a tight game with five runs in the top of the seventh inning Monday night and went on to beat the Le Mars Lady Bulldogs 9-3 in a Memorial Day high school softball match-up at the Bulldog Complex.  The Crusaders took advantage of three Le Mars errors to scored five unearned runs in the seventh.  Bailey Heaton's two-run single was the key blow.  Le Mars roughed up standout Larissa Uhl for ten hits but Uhl struckout 12 Bulldog batters.  Ashley Phelan had three hits for Le Mars and Madison Heidebrink and Holly Schneider had two each.  Heidebrink drove in two runs.  Heaton had three hits and three RBI's for Heelan who touched Bulldog pitcher Molly Renken for 13 hits.  She struck out seven.  Le Mars falls to 3-and-3 for the season.

CLASS 1A & 2A GIRLS STATE MEET AT ADEL
(Bishop Garrigan led the Class 1A team race after day-one by 31 strokes over second place Grundy Center.  Hinton is fourth and Gehlen sits in sixth place in an eight-team field)  Victoria Grasso leads the medal chase with a 79, three shots ahead of Garrigan's Sheridan Berte.  Hinton's Katie Clausen sits in fourth place with an 84.

Gehlen Catholic (5-1/2-1) 10 South O'Brien 6

(LE MARS) -- Gehlen Catholic scored six runs in the first inning and went onto beat South O'Brien 10-6 Tuesday night in War Eagle Conference softball action at the Riverview Complex.  Amber Timmins led the way with three RBI's, drilling a run-producing double to key the fast start.  Steph Rohe, elevated to the lead-off spot in the batting order over the weekend, had four of Gehlen's eleven hits.  Timmins scattered five hits but had to survive nine walks.  She struck out four.  The win was the fourth in a row for the Lady Jays as they improve to 5-and-1 for the season and 2-and-1 in the W-E-C.  Gehlen travels to Akron Wednesday night to face the defending Class 1A State Champion Akron-Westfield Westerners.  The Westerners are the number one-rated teamin 1A this season.

South O'Brien 7 Gehlen Catholic (0-3/0-3) 3

(LE MARS) -- South O'Brien cashed in on four hits and three walks in the first inning to score four runs and the Wolverines went onto beat Gehlen Catholic 7-3 Tuesday night in War Eagle Conference baseball in Le Mars.  The Jays loaded the bases in the sixth inning but failed to cash in while trailing 6-3.  Michael Whitehead took the loss to fall to 0-and-2.  He gave up seven hits and struck out eight but he walked five.  Mitchell Flack led the way offensive for the Jays with two hits, including a double, and one RBI.  Whitehead had a triple for the Jays.  Gehlen takes an 0-and-3 record to Akron Wednesday night.  The game will be carried on KLEM at 7:30.

Le Mars (4-3/1-0) 18 Storm Lake 0, three innings

(STORM LAKE) -- Emily Ellefson celebrated her 18th birthday with  a double short of the cycle Thursday night as she collected an RBI-triple and a three-run homer during an 11-run, 17-batter first inning that helped carry Le Mars to an 18-0 win over Storm Lake in three innings.  Ellefson added a single in the second but popped up to short in her final at-bat.  The Lady Bulldogs added six more runs in the second inning and Madison Heidebrink's second home run of the season completed the scoring in the third.  Emily Pick had three RBI's on two hits for Le Mars.  The Lady Bulldogs bunched ten hits with twelve walks.  Molly Renken threw a one-hitter with one walk and five strike outs, facing just ten batters in the game.  The contest was the Lakes Conference opener for both schools and the win improves Le Mars to 4-and-3 for the season.

 

(#1-1A)Akron-Westfield 5 Gehlen Catholic (5-2/2-2) 0

(AKRON) -- All-state pitcher Brandi Davis limited Gehlen to just two base runners, tossing a two-hit shutout as the top-rated Akron-Westfield girls beat Gehlen Catholic 5-0 in Akron Thursday night in War Eagle Conference softball action.  Steph Rohe's single and Lisa Gunter's double were the only Gehlen hits for the game.  The Westerners had nine hits off Amber Timmins.  Kayla Tindall, Melissa Kroksh and Kourtney Hedlund had two hits each.  Gehlen falls to 5-and-2 for the season and 2-and-2 in the W-E-C.

Le Mars (4-0/1-0) 5 Storm Lake 0

(STORM LAKE) -- Three Bulldog pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout to guide Le Mars to a 5-0 win at Storm Lake Thursday night in the Lakes Conference opener for both teams.  Chris Eckstaine threw the first three innings, limiting the Tornadoes to one hit and he struck out five.  Parker Rolfes worked the next two innings, giving up two hits and striking out two.  Colin Borchers earned a save with two innings of hitless relief with four strike outs.  Jacob Lemoreux drove in a run in the second inning with a single and that 1-0 lead stood until the Bulldogs plated four additional runs in the seventh inning to secure the outcome.  Andy Hefner keyed the seventh with a two-run single while the other two runs scored on a pair of throwing errors by the Tornadoes.  Le Mars improves to 4-and-0 for the season.

 

Akron-Westfield 5 Gehlen Catholic (0-4/0-4) 4, nine innings

(AKRON) -- Akron-Westfield pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings and then won it with another unearned run in the ninth inning Thursday night, Keeping Gehlen Catholic winless in four starts with a 5-4 victory.  Blake Wiltgen worked all nine innings for Gehlen, giving up seven hits, walking five and striking out eleven.  Wiltgen, Angel Chagolla, Mitchell Flack and Zach Wurth had two hits each for the Jays while Flack and Austin Herbst had RBI's.

FRIDAY RESULTS - June 1

Sioux City West Earlybird Tournament (Le Mars 4 Sioux City East 0   //   Le Mars (6-3) 5 Sioux City West 4, 5 innings-time limit)

(SIOUX CITY) -- Le Mars won a pair of games Friday night at the Sioux City West Earlybird Tournament to improve their season record to 6-and-3 while extending their winning streak to three straight.  The Lady Bulldogs opened play Friday with a 4-0 win over Sioux City East as Molly Renken tossed a one-hitter for Le Mars.  Emily Ellefson went 4-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles and two RBI's.  Madison Heidebrink also had a pair of RBI's.  Le Mars then edged Sioux City West 5-4 in five innings, a game that was shortened by the time limit.  Madison Heidebrink had two hits to lead the Lady Bulldogs' offense and drove in a run.  Ashley Phelan and Kylee Lang added RBI singles.  Le Mars plays two more games Saturday in the tournament.


Gehlen Catholic (6-2/3-2) 9 Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 0

(LE MARS) -- Amber Timmins threw a one-hit shutout with eight strike outs and also capped an eight-run third inning with a two-run double to lead Gehlen Catholic to a 9-0 War Eagle Conference softball win over Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Friday night at the Riverview Complex.  Steph Rohe and Shannon Smith also had two-run hits in the third for the Lady Jays.  Lisa Gunter led an eleven-hit attack with three hits.  Kori Boll had H-M-S's lone hit off Timmins.  The Lady Jays take a 6-and-2 record to Saturday's C-Y-O Tournament in Carroll.  Gehlen is 3-and-2 in the W-E-C.

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 8 Gehlen Catholic (0-5/0-5) 4

(LE MARS) -- Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn scored four unearned runs in the seventh inning Friday night to extend a 4-3 lead into an insurmountable 8-3 advantage and the Hawks went onto post an 8-4 War Eagle Conference victory over Gehlen Catholic at the Riverview Complex.  The Jays had drawn to within a run with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth before defensive miscues allowed the Hawks to break the game open.  Angel Chagolla and Blake Wiltgen had two hits each plus an RBI for Gehlen as the Jays outhit H-M-S 8-to-5.  Austin Herbst allowed four hits, working into the seventh inning for Gehlen but five walks coupled with the defensive mistakes allowed the Hawks to stay at bay.  Gehlen falls to 0-and-5 for the season and in the W-E-C as the Jays head to the C-Y-O Tournament in Carroll Saturday and Sunday.

SATURDAY RESULTS - June 2

Sioux City West Earlybird Tournament (Le Mars 12 Hinton 0, 3 innings  //  Le Mars (8-3) 6 Lawton-Bronson 3)

(SIOUX CITY) -- Le Mars extended their winning streak to five straight, wrapping up a 4-and-0 weekend run through the Sioux City West Earlybird Tournament in Sioux City Saturday.  Le Mars beat Hinton 12-0 in three innings in their first game Saturday as Molly Renken threw a two-hit shutout and Madison Heidebrink belted her third home run of the season.  Emily Pick and Kylee Lang had two hits and two RBI's each.  The Lady Bulldogs won their second game in dramatic fashion.  Emily Ellefson's three-run homer in the seventh inning snapped a 3-3 tie and sent Le Mars to a 6-3 win over Lawton-Bronson.  Molly Renken also picked up the win in that game.  The wins leave Le Mars at 8-and-3 for the season.  They'll return to Lakes Conference play Monday night at home against Emmetsburg.

(CARROLL) -- Gehlen Catholic finished fourth at the C-Y-O Tournament in Carroll on Saturday, playing three one-run games.  The Lady Jays opened play with a 5-4 win over Kuemper Catholic as Abby Freking had a triple and a single and drove in four runs to lead Gehlen to a come-from-behind victory.  Freking's second hit of the game plated a pair of runs in the third inning to erase a 4-3 deficit.  Amber Timmins and Steph Rohe also had two hits each as Gehlen collected nine hits for the game.  Timmins got the win in the pitching circle, scattering nine hits and walking one while striking out five.  In the semifinals, Bishop Heelan beat Gehlen 3-2 in eight innings.  Larissa Uhl held the Lady Jays to four hits with Brittany Krienert getting two of the hits for the Jays.  Uhl struck out eight.  Amber Timmins took the loss, scattering ten hits while striking out seven.  Fort Dodge St. Edmond edged Gehlen 4-3 in the third place game, scoring the go-ahead run in the fifth to break a 3-3 tie.  The Lady Jays got RBI singles from Lisa Gunter and Abby Freking and Alison Schnepf added a RBI double in a three-run first inning for a 3-1 lead.  The Gaels tied it with two runs in the third.  Alison Schnepf and Shannon Smith had two hits each for Gehlen.  Schnepf took the loss, allowing eight hits with no walks and striking out two.  Gehlen is 7-and-4 for the season and returns to War Eagle Conference play Monday at Remsen St. Mary's in a game that will be carried on KLEM.

C-Y-O Tournament at Carroll

Fort Dodge St. Edmond 12 Gehlen Catholic 2, five innings

(CARROLL) -- Fort Dodge St. Edmond sent Gehlen Catholic to the consolation bracket Saturday with a 12-2 victory over the Jays in five innings at the C-Y-O Tournament's opening day at Carroll.  The two teams were tied at 1-1 through three innings before the Gaels scored six runs in the fourth and five more in the fifth to end the game on the ten-run rule.  Gehlen was held to just four hits with Michael Whitehead, Blake Wiltgen and Zach Wurth collecting singles and Austin Herbst added a double.  Wurth's hit drove in one of the Jays' two runs.  Gehlen takes an  0-and-6 record into a 1 o'clock consolation bracket semifinal game against Storm Lake St. Mary's Sunday in Carroll.

(CARROLL) -- Remsen St. Mary's opened the game with a four-run first inning enroute to a 5-3 victory over Gehlen Catholic Sunday in the C-Y-O baseball tournament consolation semifinals.  Michael Whitehead had a RBI double and Blake Wiltgen drove in a run with a single for the Jays, who slip to 0-and-7 for the season heading into a War Eagle Conference match-up with Remsen St. Mary's Monday night in Remsen.
