(REMSEN) – The fifth-ranked Gehlen Catholic girls hit the Christmas holiday break with a perfect 8-and-0 record Tuesday night with a 47-29 War Eagle Conference victory over Remsen St. Mary’s.  The Lady Jays closed the first half on a 9-3 run to take a ten-point lead at 21-11 and just steadily pulled away after halftime, leading by 18 after three quarters and eventually going ahead by 22 early in the fourth quarter.  Gehlen has now won 14-of-the-last 15 from the Hawks.  Emily Holtgrewe led a balanced attack for Gehlen with eleven points.  Amber Timmins and Steph Rohe had ten each and Katelin Langel added nine.  Lyndsie Schorg led St. Mary’s with twelve.  The Hawks fall to 2-and-7 for the season and 0-and-4 in the War Eagle Conference.  Gehlen is 5-and-0 in the league.

In the boys half of the doubleheader in Remsen Tuesday night, Trevor Bouma ran off nine straight points in the middle of the first half to erase a 9-8 deficit and Gehlen Catholic steadily pulled away from that point to win 68-37 over Remsen St. Mary’s.  Bouma finished with a game-high 23 points.  Michael Whitehead had 18 for the Jays.  Beau Pick finished with 15 for the Hawks and Tyler Delperdang added 12.  The win was the seventh in a row for Gehlen and sent the Jays to the holiday break with a 7-and-1 record and 5-and-0 in the War Eagle Conference race.  The Hawks fall to 4-and-5 and 0-and-4 in league play.

Gehlen returns from the holiday break to host Akron-Westfield January 3rd.

(LE MARS) – Shane Graves hit a three-point play with two seconds left in overtime after a Paul Jacobson steal and pass and number-five Bishop Heelan handed number-seven Le Mars their first loss of the season, 59-56.  The outcome leaves the Bulldogs with a 6-and-1 record at the holiday break while Heelan improves to 5-and-1.  Graves finished with 25 points to match Le Mars’ standout Austin Homan’s 25 points for game-high scoring honors.  Jordan Eisma had 14 for the Bulldogs and Cameron Farrell added 13 for the Crusaders.  The two were tied at 52-all at the end of regulation play.  Homan’s basketball with two-tenths of a second left sent the game into overtime.

In the girls game, number-six Bishop Heelan remained unbeaten with a 77-50 win over Le Mars.  The Crusaders built a nine-point lead by halftime and steadily pulled away after intermission.  Madison Yohe led Heelan with 19 points and Natalie Vondrak added 16.  Mary Kate Eckstaine had ten for Le Mars and Emily Ellefson tossed in nine.  Bishop Heelan is 7-and-0 at the holiday break and Le Mars slips to 3-and-6.

Le Mars returns from the holiday break to play at Cherokee on January 3rd.
