Construction North Of Merrill Nearing Completion
(Le Mars) -- County engineer Tom Rohe reported to the County Supervisors that the construction project involving County road C-38 and K-42 located on the north end of Merrill is nearing completion. However, with the road construction on U-S Highway 75 still on-going, some detours are still in place.
Rohe says the county road K-42 still has some finishing touches needed before it can be declared open.
Tough Truck Competition Re-scheduled For Saturday
(Le Mars) -- Fear not Tough Truck fans, your event may have been postponed due to the rain showers that fell Thursday evening at the Plymouth County Fairgrounds, however, fair officials have re-scheduled the competition. Rich Benson, who serves as the vice chairman of the fair board and chairman of the ticket committee says the event will be held.
The event will start at 6:30 p.m. with gates to open at 5:00 p.m. Concessions will be available, but there isn't any admission fee.
Des Moines Water Works Reaches Fundraising Goal
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Des Moines Water Works says it's reached a $200,000 fundraising goal to renovate its park.
Officials announced Wednesday that the money will be used to integrate the ecological and social function of the park and river, which is located near the downtown area.
The plan will be developed by a consultant team that was selected through a competition in January 2012.
Grants and funds totaled $165,000. Private donors contributed an additional $35,000.
The 1,500-acre Water Works Park provides the main water supply for the city. It also connects to an extensive trail network.
DuPont-Pioneer Purchases South African Seed Company
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - DuPont says it has bought a majority share in a South Africa-based seed company and plans to increase research and improve seed availability for farmers in Africa.
DuPont says its Iowa-based Pioneer subsidiary has acquired 80 percent ownership in Pannar Seed Limited, which has operations throughout Africa and other parts of the world. Transaction details
were not released.
DuPont Pioneer says it will invest $6.2 million by 2017 to establish a technology hub in South Africa to serve the region, similar to the research hubs that Pioneer has established in Brazil, India and China.
Pannar receives access to the Pioneer genetics library and its corn breeding and biotechnology capabilities. Pioneer will tap into Pannar's expertise and reach across Africa, and its corn genetics
developed specifically for the region.
County Attorney Asked To Leave Office
WAVERLY, Iowa (AP) - Jurors are set to take up deliberations again in a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by a former Floyd County attorney's office employee.
The Bremer County jury deliberated for more than two hours on Tuesday before breaking until Wednesday.
Theresa Farmer's lawsuit accuses former county attorney Jesse Marzen of touching her, making sexual comments and posting inappropriate things on the walls of his office from early 2007 until her firing in 2009. She says county supervisors and other leaders failed to act on her repeated complaints.
Marzen lost his job as county attorney in 2010 after the high court suspended his law license for a sexual relationship he had with a client before he was elected county attorney in November
