Candidates Voice Opinion on Levy

Polls are open for voters wanting to cast their vote for the LeMars school district board of education.  Besides the candidates, voters will also see a measure for the Instructional Support Levy listed on the ballot.  Plymouth County auditor, Stacy Feldman explains the levy.

The Instructional Support Levy measure has appeared before on election ballots, only to be defeated. LeMars is one of 15 school districts not to have approved the measure. Of the 359 school districts across Iowa, 344 have approved the Instructional Support Levy.


Six candidates are vying for four positions.  Five candidates support the Instructional Support Levy and one opposes the measure.  Here are the opinions of each candidate with regards to the Instructional Support Levy.

Pat Murphy is an attorney with the Murphy, Colins and Bixenman law firm and has lived in LeMars for more than 30 years.

Dr. Mark Stelzer moved to LeMars in 1982.  He is a surgeon with the Stelzer Surgery PC

Fred Zenk is a farmer and a life-long resident of the LeMars community.

Mark Hemmingson is an attorney.  He was raised in LeMars, moved away for a few years and then returned home in 2007.

Mark Frentress moved to LeMars in 2001 and is perhaps remembered as the former manager of HyVee supermarket.  He now markets insurance for Farm Bureau Financial Services.

Merlin Wagner is a farmer and also owns a construction company.

Hemmingson and Zenk are unopposed in the election.  While Murphy, Stelzer, Frentress and Wagner are seeking the two At-Large positions on the school board.
