Motorcycle Accident On Industrial Road

(Le Mars) -- Le Mars Police are investigating an accident involving a motorcycle and a pick-up truck.  The accident happened at about 12:45 p.m. this (Tuesday) afternoon on Industrial Road near the Prospect Intersection.    A preliminary investigation shows the motorcycle, driven by 25 year old Nicholas Weber of Le Mars, collided with the pick-up truck driven by 70 year old Larry Beckmann of Remsen.  Beckmann was crossing the road near the Quality Truck Wash when Weber collided with the pick-up truck.  Weber sustained serious injuries.  He was first transported to Floyd Valley Hospital, but was then airlifted by helicopter and flown to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.  Beckmann did not report any injuries.  Assisting at the accident scene were the Le Mars Ambulance Service, Le Mars Fire Department, and the Plymouth County Sheriff's Department.

BPI Lays Off 86 Corporate Employees

(Dakota Dunes) -- More bad news for Beef Products, Incorporated.  Last week you'll recall that B-P-I had to shut down operations and layoff more than 600 employees at their Amarillo, Texas; Garden City, Kansas; and Waterloo, Iowa plants.  Now, B-P-I has been forced to eliminate 86 corporate level positions at its headquarters in Dakota Dunes, South Dakota.  The latest round of layoffs represents jobs in the accounting, logistics, engineering, and human resources, as well as reductions at the company's machine shop-assembly facility at South Sioux City.  Co-founder, Regina Roth says she is deeply saddened by the events, saying: "This causes very personal heatache for us.  We are not some big conglomerate, but a small family owned business.  We personally know and have worked side by side with these people and our family business will never be the same with this loss."  The job losses are directly attributable to a widespread campaign of misinformation against the company and its product, despite ardent support from leading food safety experts and the USDA who remain asertive that Lean Finely Texutured Beef is safe, wholesome and nutritious.
