MONDAY RESULTS – February 20

(basketball)

(LE MARS) -- The Le Mars boys withstood an upset bid by Spirit Lake to win their 3A District Tournament opener 52-46 at Carey gym Monday night.  The victory sends the Bulldogs into the District three championship game Thursday night in Sioux Center against top-rated, unbeaten M-O-C/Floyd Valley at 7 o'clock.  Le Mars missed 13 of their 25 foul shots Monday night to open the door for the Indians but the Bulldogs led by five to seven points most of the night and were able to send Spirit Lake to the tournament sidelines.  Austin Homan led the way with 15 points and sophomore Jake Irwin nailed four of the Bulldogs' six three-pointers to finish with 12.  Paul Brown had 15 for Spirit Lake and Sawyer Harms finished with 12.  Le Mars improves to 18-and-4 for the season while Spirit Lake closes out a 14-and-8 campaign.  Thursday nights District final against the 22-and-0 Dutch will be carried on KLEM starting at 6:50.

(ORANGE CITY) -- It was another frenetic finish and a third straight overtime game for the Gehlen Catholic girls  but they are headed to their first-ever State basketball tournament appearance, thanks to a 54-53 win over number-eleven Central Lyon Monday night at the Unity Christian gym in Orange City.  Katelin Langel's off-balance bank-shot in the lane with six seconds to play in overtime rallied the number-nine Lady Jays to the one-point victory.  Langel's game-winning opportunity came after the Lions turned the ball over taking too long on an in-bounds play.  Emily Holtgrewe may have made an even more dramatic shot to send the game into overtime.  Trailing 49-46, Holtgrewe missed a three-point attempt and Central Lyon rebounded the ball.  But Steph Rohe's defense on Lexi Ackerman forced a travel call and Gehlen got another opportunity with seven seconds to play in regulation.  The Jays set a play above the free throw line for Holtgrewe to take a three-point shot behind a double screen and she banked in the tying three with three seconds to play.  It was her fifth three of the night and she finished with a team-high 16 points.  Langel and Amber Timmins had 12 each.  Central Lyon's Kelsey Ackerman led all scorers with 19 with Kori Schulte adding 17 for the Lions.  Gehlen heads to the girls State tournament next Monday with a 20-and-4 record.  They'll meet number-two North Butler (21-and-1) at 11:45 at the Wells Fargo Arena.

(LE MARS) -- Michael Whitehead had 22 points and Trevor Bouma added 19 to lead Gehlen Catholic to a 68-58 1A boys District Tournament semifinal round victory over Remsen-Union Tuesday night at the Bob Kneip Family gym in Le Mars.  Bouma had 16 of his 19 points in the first half to lead the Jays to a 29-26 halftime lead.  Whitehead scored 18 points in the second half to help Gehlen secure their ninth straight victory and improve to 21-and-2 for the season.  The Jays took the lead for good midway through the third quarter but never led by double digits until the end of the game.  Alec Mousel had a career-high 13 points for the Jays and Blake Wiltgen hauled down 14 rebounds, seven on the offensive boards.  Sophomore Tanner Hilbrands led the Rockets with 19 points before fouling out in the final minute of the game.  Senior Alex Hansen had 14.  Remsen-Union closes out the season with a 16-and-8 record.  Gehlen Catholic meets Kingsley-Pierson Thursday night in Cherokee for the district three championship at 7 o'clock.  The Jays beat the Panthers 60-52 in early January.  Kingsley-Pierson surprised top-seeded Lawton-Bronson 56-49 Tuesday night in the other district three semifinal round game.  The win improved the Panthers to 19-and-4 for the season.  Coverage of the Gehlen/Kingsley-Pierson game Thursday night will be carried on Y Country, Y 101.3 in Sioux City.
